Steelhead for Beginner

Hey! Newbie fisherman here. I’m getting into fishing for steelhead this year and planning to start with winter steelhead. Are there any rivers or creeks I should really look into? I’m in Hillsboro and don’t mind driving 1 hour or 1.5 hours out to a nice river or creek where I could atleast learn the basics. Also, when would the winter steelhead run begin this year? Since the river levels are lower than other years.

Welcome to OFF and to fishing. Steelhead are the fish of "a thousand casts". So remain patient, until you get it dialed in.

Most winter runs seem to begin in November. My dad always used to hit the Alsea, on the day after Thanksgiving.

Visit my friend Eric's website here, to help get you up to speed more quickly. And scroll down to the NW Coast section.

Bobbers and beads or bait bags lots of fish each year. And spoons allow you to hit most pockets.

If you're into spinners then check out the Oregon Bible, to also get you up to speed more quickly. Look for a 1st or 2nd edition copy, if you can find one.

Good luck and tight lines, TD
