so i hooked this steelhead last night, yes i landed it, but it jumper 3 times that were easily 6 ft or more out of the water. it was a little fish like 6 or 7 lbs but it was insane the jumps it took, so whats the highest you have had a fish jump? i thought 4 ft was about max but this one flew out of the water. she didn't fight for long took one good run then came in, also had a hook deep down her throat, could barley see the shaft of the hook.

6ft is probably the highest I've seen a summer jump...They can do it. Had one hit that mark in about 2 ft of water? Didn't make sense..

Nice job on the spunky fish!

yeah thats what this was about 3 ft of water 3 consecutive 6 ft + jumps it was insane, the came in like a wet rag, i thought it was gonna be a good long fight but.

I have had them jump 5-6 foot but usally only when they are hooked center top jaw out threw the nose. They really disagree with that for some reason

The majority of my winter fish were hooked that way, and your right they don't seem to like it much. I had one go about 4 feet which I thought was pretty high, 6 feet would be really cool to see. I did notice last week when I caught that summer It didn't fight half as much as the winters.

this one was super deep hooked. and i have noticed my bobber and jig fish jump a lot, but then a couple didn't jump at all. they best ones are tongue hooked fish they go crazy, dont know how i managed that with a bobber and jig but it was a crazy fight.

Nose and toung hooked fish are the best. My last fish took a white corkie n yarn with salmon oil scent. Boy did she gobble that right up just passed the toung. Hit it so hard it was like i was fishing a 5 spinner or 2/5oz spoon.

Highest i have had a fish jump was close to 4 feet so far. All my fish this year have been jumpers and really pissed off when they get stung in the lip. There is some 4 salts in there this year.

I hit a 30" (at least 11#) last year the took to the air like a damn bird. 3 hard runs down river, was an incredible fight, an with 6# line on a 7 foot rod probably best fight ever.

LIGHT GEAR. Gotta love it. But i been upping it up to heavier gear, and more sutable to control big fish. But i learned steelheading with a 7'6" rod for 3 years and 6lb test. Still do it to this day because it was way too fun.

Its all about the fight, with the lower clear water situations light is where it's at, just play them, sure you'll lose some maybe more than some but, it really teaches you how to land that monster in unpredictable situations.

Amen on that. I have landed somewhere near 60 steelhead the last 3 years. All but like 10 were on lighter gear.

Very true. Like the 32"r i got the other week. I was using a heaver rod with 10lb test on 10 leader cuz higher water. The Rod could take the fish no problem, but the fish def put the bendo on the rod to the max at times. It was my skills at handling the fish that were really put to the test.

The spot i was at was no match for a 7'6" rod and the 32" i got. I will still use the light gear ever year too.

So we can End hijack or I can, The winter in my avatar did some beastly jumps easy 4 feet high and 4 feet across water.

Rod quality does help, and everyone in fish with uses heavier gear, yet my biggest fish (salmon) at a fuzz under 37# on the scale was fought on a lighter 8'6 on 10# leader, oh she was pissed an wanted back to the ocean. You don't expect that while steel fishing, took a solid 30 minutes to get that hog banked. That's a hog winter btw

I never had a steelhead Jump 6 feet but I've had Marlin do it with ease... Jumpers always make for a fun fight.

This year has been the opposite for me; the winters came in relatively easier than the summers...the summers just went absolutely berserk. I figure it has much to do with the very cold water since some of the winters were caught in 40-42 degree water.

Were you bobber and jig fishing? did you hook it right in the top of the mouth by the nose? Seems like those fish are always my biggest jumpers...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPdBZ4u9OCE That has one of my best jumpers on it. click the little gear thing and watch it in 1080hd...

no this one was on bait had her deep in the throat. most of my bober and jig fish have been semi mild ony a few actually going wild and i havent had a in the nose hook up this year. had one swallow the jig, one in the tongue, and 3 out the top but on the side. i think haha its hard to remember hook placment

Summers in general will fight harder and be more crazy and acrobatic. Most of the time hens will be more acrobatic than bucks.
