John Day

I am new here and i guess i should tell a little bit about myself before I get to my question...

I am 28 yrs old and I am addicted to fishing... whew.. that feels good to say it out loud...

I live in vancouver but will/have gone all over to chase fish. I just recently in the last couple of years have gotten hot and heavy into salmon/steelhead fishing. I can't seem to get enough of it..(and being married and having a 6 yr. old doesn't always allow me to do all the fishing I want...

Anyways here is my question.. i have fished the john day a few times this year and last in search of some steelhead and have come up empty... I know that river is probably not the best river for me to have high success but i absolutly love the country up there and the fishing pressure is fairly light for me. I have tried pulling plugs in various colors and even bobber fished a little. Am I doing anything wrong or am I just puttin my time in.

Anyways thanks in advance for any help... pm's welcome

Mooshu;
Welcome aboard,we're glad to have you here. Sounds like you're in the same boat as most members here. Family or fishing? That's why I decided to take my kids fishing with me as much as possible. My daughter still goes once in a while. Autofisher is a whole 'nother story...totally addicted. Sounds like you have a good handle on your favorite water. Just keep at it and it will pay OFF for you. At least that's what everyone around here keeps telling me.

I didn't get to go, but he sent me a text message a bit ago bragging about it. 12 fish between him and his brother.

Is there any good bank/wading spots not too far off from I-84, maybe near Le Page Park? Do the fish shoot upriver out of the Columbia rather quick? I've never been up that way yet.

I always start there, unless the wind is up(!).
I have fished that area for years. I like the mag warts, in pink,
orange and red.
Start at the dead line, can't read it anymore-but it's there.
Usual 20 to 26 pulls and trolling slow enough to make the
rods throb.
Use your favorite scent and change out if that color is not
working.
I also use the Fat Fish (I have had very good success with
the flouresent red with the black bars). Roy from Wordens
showed me that one--Thanks Roy!
I've had several 40"'rs to the boat, here and all the way
up to the mouth. Talk about nirtro time. Those were on
Brads, red with the checks on the side. Regular Brads not
mags.
Good luck! Send reports!

I caught my first summer steelhead under the bridge with a spinner. I heard some fish that are going up further in the Columbia will go up the John Day a little bit.
