I don't know what I was thinking yesterday. Went out around 2:30 for a few hours. I walked into a few of the spots I like this time of yr and the lower section had people fishing already. So I walked up as far as I could and fished down hoping "my hole" would be open by the time I got back down to it. I was throwing hardware and wishing I had taken time to get some drift hooks. All I had was size 4.
Along my walk back, laying on the trail was an interesting concoction... Two corks on about 1" of line and a bit of yarn. Don't know the name. I'm sure it has one. But I dubbed it "dingle berrys". I stuck it on my hat and continued down river.
I got out on a ledge I knew would be holding and started looking. Didn't take long. I spotted 3 smaller steel holding. First pass with my lil Cleo spooked one. Changed to all black spinner. Spooked another. Tried for the last one. Spooked it of course. So I "chased" them around in this shoot/tailout for 20 min. Pushing them from one side to the other.
Finally decided to try drifting my "dingle berries" I'd just found. Throw on a size four above my recycled gear. After about two drifts. I feel a diff tapp tap. Lift my rod. Feel a thrash. See the fish turn about under my feet. And nothing. Couple cast later a bit farther across. Same thing. Tap tap tap. Hook set. Head shake fish off. Dang it!!! Next cast same drift. Tap tap. BAMMM!! It sticks. Fish gave me a good fight for it's size. After a few mom of stressing if this fish was going to go through the gauntlet of lava flow below it. I finally coaxed it to swim up river. And landed it at my feet.
I love orange. But I gotta incorporate some black. You know. OSU !! Lol.
