Hypothesis: regarding small mouth bass and salmon fishing

went out yesterday and had five take downs using bobber and eggs, but no hook set. A couple hours later a kid next to me using a similar set up landed a nice 2.5-3 pound Small Mouth Bass.

I am thinking maybe it was bass giving me a takedown, but upon setting the hook I was ripping out the lip.

Hmmmmm.....

The weather changed and there were no more bites for a couple hours so I packed it in for another day.

Smallies have tough mouths, even with a really strong hook set I doubt you'll rip there lips. Could be other species down there?

tons of species in the watershed Lizardman is fishing, suckers, carp, REAL catfish, sturgeon, smallmouth and largemouth bass etc.

Exactly. It could be suckers, but I don't think I was deep enough to be on the bottom, could be a catfish opening its mouth and letting go as soon as it felt resistance. One of my friends pulled a 29 or so inch flathead catfish out Wednesday night.

I agree with Shane. There's no way you can rip it out of a bass. they're way too tough.
