Herring

Hi, new to fishing here. I have dumb question. I have been told that there is spots near Troutdale for herring fishing, person said its fun and easy for new like me and it’s about season now. However all information I can find is about Smelt. Is it the same thing? When and where is should I try that?

Welcome to OFF. Herring and Smelt are basically the same. Except that Smelt have teeth and Herring don't.

There is a run of Smelt on the Sandy River and peeps use dip nets I believe. But it looks like the river is NOT open for Smelt fishing this year, per the hotlink below.
