A few small cutties on the Little Nestucca River

I took a trip to the Little Nestucca River this weekend, hoping to get into some cutthroat on the dry fly. The drive was lovely, the river was lovely, and the weather was lovely. All blue skies and hot sunshine. Therein lied the problem – the fish where not biting. I speculate that the sunshine smothered their courage, even though I did get into a few 4-inch cuts on a Borden Special.

I tried a few different approaches, such as nymphing and casting dries. They did nibble at my dry, but I never seemed to get a good set. Maybe I needed a smaller fly? I mostly targeted deep pools and bends in the river. Maybe I could've done better casting dries in shallower water, or just going on an overcast day.

I'd love to hear any thoughts or tips on this situation. When all's said and done, it was a fun day on the river.

Hello Reilly! I used to fish that water “back in the Day”! Given our lack of rain, Id wait til Fall! If you must tho, Id recommend trying some Wet Royal Coachman flies. Check those barbs. Goid luck!

There's a couple of access points in tidewater. I'd go try there now.

Would you throw for sea run cuts at this time?

I believe that's where they are now. I have done well in June and July in tidewater but on a different river. I've got a kayak so that helps immensely.
