Tell me about the Southfork

Been fishing the Siuslaw...Went north to the Siletz yesterday and now I am thinking on going south and learn a new drift.. Drove by the South Umpqua a few times on the freeway and have often thought about it...I think I will do more than think this week and actually go down there...

Advice on put in's and takeouts appreciated.. Anything scary:shock:? Wasting time and gas???

Thanks,

Bill

It's not the South fork....it's the South Umpqua river.

Hmmm....for somene not familiar with the South river I would suggest putting in at Canyonville park and floating to Lawson's bar, most of the Hatchery steelhead return to Canyon creek. You can also launch at Stanton park in Canyonville which is just downstream from Canyonville. You can also fish from Canyonville to Myrtle creek and Take out at Templeton beach, some nice water in there but you will have to run Weaver rapid, there is an Orange driftboat on the bluff above warning you to be careful! A kind of memorial to those that have perished there! Be careful at Weaver!

Also be prepared to share the water with some jet sleds, some stretches of the south can be crowded! Also, expect to fish around a lot of guide boats, the guides usually plug up the river pretty bad when the fishing is good. Most everyone side drifts the south, it is by far the most effective technique.

Yip,my bad,,,South Umpqua...:)

Not sure if I am going to make it this week, but I saved the info you gave me..I will make it down at least once this year..Weaver rapids huh?? Bad water doesn't scare me (much) but I do tend to avoid it if possible..I am into fishing, not whitewater running...LOL

Thanks for the info...I have it saved..

Go to canyonville, put in at the park behind the casino. take a kicker and run up to the bridge and side-drift back to the put-in and repeat until limited out...fish will bite well until about 11 am so get there early

That is Stanton park, expect a lot of boats in that 1/2 mile stretch of river! If the fishing is good there might be 15-20! It's gets pretty crowded!

Probably no best color. It mostly depends on the flows, I think size would be of more importance!

Would these be the spots to start at for us bankies too? I will be driving south on Monday and would like to do some fishing. I was thinking about starting at Canyonville and heading down 227?

I have only fished there once, we went without the boat...doh. Went back and got boat...8:30 ish by the time we put in.
6-8 guides had already been putting a whipping on em for 2 hrs.
We still managed a 13lb clipped buck and a little hen one on flame corkie/roe, the other on pink/white SMALL yarnie.
There were fish caught on all colors as well as pink worms and jigs boondogged
This was middle of march last year

Ya, there is bank access. Stanton park has a nice hole but most everyone fishes right behind the casino, just head towards the river past the burger king and park on the right hand side of the road before the bridge. If the fishing is good there will usually be 15-20 rigs parked there....doubt you'll get lonely! The Cow creek tribe owns this property and allow access, there are a couple of nice holes to fish. If you fish, post up and let us know how you do!

One word of warning, the South river is below 900cfs at Tiller, boating will be tough! Fishing in general will be tough on the South!

Spinners, spoons, jigs, drift gear....I have seen fish caught on all the above by bankies fishing at Canyonville! Seems like the fish come in pods, it can be red hot one day, or red hot for a few hours one day and then absolutely die!
