Sunday on the Sandy...

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delay on this. I have been meaning to report on my first trip to the Sandy EVER, but have been busy fishing after work this week. Those trips were not as eventful so no reports there.

I went Salmon fishing Saturday on the upper Multnomah Channel and had a great time but after logging trip #9 in the books, still a big zero on the springer front. When I got home, I realized I had missed a text from Hans who asked me what I was doing Sunday. I had planned on spending Sunday with my wife and kids but reluctantly responded as any true fishing addict would. Hans asked me if I wanted to do a float with he and Fred from Oxbow to Dabney. I discussed this at length with my wife explaining that its not every day I have the chance to float a river in a drift boat and my wife said I had better go, or I would regret it. So.....

The day went great, even after a late start due to forgetting a phone that was conveniently left in a spot that would have surely earned my truck a break in. (This bit is more for Hans and Fred. A little inside joke...) On top of this my baggage was denied and I had to later pick it up from baggage claim once we arrived back at the terminal.

Hans put us on the fish like I knew he would allowing Fred to land his first steel! A beautiful 27 inch hen, that Im sure by now has been enjoyed to the fullest! Always a hard fight and a fish that requires patience and calm to land, Fred handled the fish like he had done it many times before and did a great job listening to two guys coaching him through the catch without telling Hans and I to shut up. That would end up being the only fish caught for the day although I think Hans and I probably missed a couple opportunities. We also witnessed a 40 inch sturgeon caught not to far below Oxbow. Amazing that those bruisers make there way up the tribs like that.

Here is the rest in picture form! Thank you to Hans for being a great host as always and the fun had by all on the boat that day! Awesome! I am excited for our next trip to Tillamook bay to try to get on some springers there.

Cheers,

Chris

Before I got my drift boat I had that convo with my wife many times. Fortunately, she understands me.

Good report. Glad you got out. Good luck on the springer.

I too am blessed with a wonderful wife who understands my passion. In fact I was just talking to her about the fact that I have not missed a weekend of fishing in nearly 2 years! It is rare you find a girl that will encourage your having a hobby and passion that keeps you away from home most weekends. She and the kids do join me frequently and those days are even better days!

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks for posting pictures and a great story Chris! I still get a chuckle about your baggage not fitting in the overhead bin!

Seeing Fred hook and land his 1st Steelie was pretty awesome. We have another convert! We had it for dinner that night and it was tasty!

Looking forward to Tillamook bay.

Yes indeed it is! Hans told me where he got it. A member here but I can't remember his name. I would like one about half the size for my truck!

My wife understands, and she wants me to have my fishing hobby, she just want let me but the boat I want (I'm thinking one like Kardoctor's would do nicely). Go figure she won't let me crack open the savings account and row it home, after all, I bought her a house 3 years ago. It's just not fair. Anybody got any cheese to go with my whine?

That is a great stretch of the Sandy, and to be able to see it from a drift boat makes it so much better. Glad you were able to make the trip. Nice understanding wife, worth more than their weight in gold.
