Steelhead fishing || centerpin vs fly fishing

Hey guys I live in the Great Lakes region, New York to be specific. I have been fishing for a good 6 years now and the majority of my fish have came off spinning tackle. Last year I saw a video on YouTube on a homemade centerpin and I made that and fished with it. Its not the best centerpin but it works and I have caught 35 fish on it. Im looking to upgrade myself because I have no real fly fishing or centerpin gear. I have expierence with my crude centerpin but I don't really know how to cast it right. Also I'm highly agaisnt killing fish and using eggs for bait. I haven't ever fished with an egg sac or kept a steelhead. I would appreciate some help on the future of my fishing status.

Not sure if this is correct or not but this is what I'm thinking.

Centerpin Fishing

Cons
- Have to kill fish for eggs for massive catch rates
( I don't enjoy killing fish that I won't eat or just for eggs)
- No real skill involved
( I have fished with a centerpin and I don't mean to ruffle feathers here )

Pros
- Long drifts
- Catch a ton of Steelhead
- Fish deep water and pools more effectively

Fly Fishing

Cons
- Hard to match the same catching rate as a centerpin

Pros
- Don't have to kill fish
- More involved into the sport IMO
- You get to learn about insects, reading water, hatches and much more
- Seems enjoyable to cast like that

I'm highly confused by your posting.

I grab my centerpin when I fish solo.

Here's a Salmon I caught and killed Monday with mine.
( No, I didn't do it for my ego, I did it because it was a hatchery fish )

 Yeah i've killed lots of hatchery fish, there is a reason for them being in the rivers. :thumb: I make sure they are eaten so there is no waste, that would make me sad. I've never used a centerpin so.................

Great post. It looks like you already answered your own questions. Be careful, a fall from your horse at that altitude could be pretty rough...
