Some recent fly tying

I thought I'd post a couple recent flies. If I've done this right you should be able to click the image for a larger view.

These are working now on the Mckenzie, fairly close to the bank, in sizes 14-16
cdc elk hair caddis - for grannom caddis.

This is a march brown emerger I am going to try out as soon as I can catch a MB hatch:

Here is a mayfly spinner cripple:

A MadamX, for golden stones, I also tie a green version for caddis:

And an olive bunny leech, for when I am fishing for trout and hoping for steelhead. :)

Don't be too hard on me, I haven't been tying flies long (less than a year).

Methinks thou doth protest too much.

Those are real beauties. Buggy. Bushy enuf to float the McKenzie currents, and attract many strikes. More!

Great tyes mlw !

Great tyes mlw !

Those are great looking flies...wondering what the wing matl. is on the march brown please.

Thinking about a trip up that way tomorrow..I like the place up there by Westfir...
dunno what it's like this time of year but can always stop at
Black's on the way out if wf fails to produce.

Cheers,

The wing is Hareline Medallion sheeting, medium dun.

Here is another cripple with the same stuff. It has a slight horizontal bend in the hood (towards you in the pic), and a single trailing wing meant to imitate those bugs that get a wing down in the water.

thanks for the kind words,

Medallion sheeting...

Medallion sheeting...

...looks like real wings mlw..oh, just noticed the two 'tails' on the cripples...micro fibbets presumably? Thanks again, I may have to find some Medallion sheeting and try it for a damsel...the lmb where I flyfish go crazy when the damsels start touching down.

Cheers,

They all look amazing to me. Keep up the great work. I'll get there someday. Be safe.

microfibbets - yes. I still struggle tying them on drys -particularly small flies, but I think their size and weight (sparseness) are good imitation of the real thing, and light enough to support the fly in surface film. Stalculps suggests giving the microfibbets a crimp with a pliers to mess them up a little. I have a personal page with a few of the patterns.

re damsels: I've been contemplating the same idea, have been poking around for a good howto or something on tying one with a bound bucktail or deer hair extended body, as I have some blue and green deer hair that I like the color of. I also nabbed a piece of blue foam from work for a foam body.

I am not sure its necessary, but it seemed like a good idea to me to pretreat Medallion sheeting for dries with WaterShed. I got the sheeting at Homewaters, in Eugene - and the idea to try it from Shane Stalcups book Mayflies, Top to Bottom - an excellent book - he's a big fan of new materials for flies.

Micro Fibbets and blue damsels...

Micro Fibbets and blue damsels...

Well when I was tying small mays I had trouble
getting the two tails separated so I'd just use 4 or 5
tails and usually two or three of them would splay,
then I'd cut out the ones that din't fit in...until I read...
Fly Tyer magazine I think it was...about adding a small
dubbing ball at the bend, then adding a fibbet either
side of the ball..pretty much made that an easy job
after that. For three as in second stage adult, the center
one first, then the dubbing ball then the outside two.
Sure made life easy when I was doing tiny mays. I never
went smaller than a Mustad 20 though. That was small
enough for anything I was doing where I came from.

On the damsels...I've got a pattern a Master tied
at the last Albany show and it's very simple, though
the wing is complicated. I'm thinking the medallion for
the wings and a simple length of ribbed blue foam of
some kind and maybe some whiskers. Could rib with
black thread to get the segmentation and maybe add
some burnt mono eyes and a few black hackle 'whiskers'
for the legs. Something like that should be a fast tie.
Thinking an 8 or a 6 for the bass I go after. I've actually
seen them clear the water by a foot or more trying to
grab a wind blown damsel. It would have to be way too
much fun to tag a good bass while it was airborn !

I like the sound of your extended deer hair body
which I'm sure would float right and the medallion
wings must be easy enough to cast. Oh and I looked
at all your flies...great work there.

Cheers,

MontanaMoose
