Salmon and steelhead noob

I grew up fishing lakes and ponds. Light tackle stuff. Never fished for Salmon or Steelhead before but want to get into it. I recently inherited an older rig and am wondering if it will suffice. The rod is a long handle 6'6" Pacific Striker rated for 15-30 lb test. The reel is a Penn Jigmaster 500. I will be mostly bank fishing along the Applegate.

Too be honest...you can hook nooks and steelies on any rod...if you know the rod well enough. It all depends on how you are wanting to fish for them. I usually side drift for nooks. So I like 8'6"medium to 9'medium. You can pm me for more info. If you want. I don't fish the applegate...but a river is river. Haha.
Good luck,
Dale

Would work maybe for plunking or boat fishing, but your probably going to have trouble casting lighter weights and lures and the rod is a bit short. Would make a good keeper sturgeon, bottom fish, and salmon rod if fishing from a boat.
