Salem area...

I will be spending the day in Salem this Sunday and was wondering if someone in the area would be willing to share a few places to wet a line. I've never fished this area and just thought that one of the locals might give me a heads up, I will be banking it...thanks in advance for any help.

Well theres walling pond and cascade gateway that just got stocked like a week and a half to 2 weeks ago. Or you can fish the willamete river downtown.

i saw a guy pull some nice probably 18 to20 inchers from walter wirth lake at cascade gateway...right across the creek in the park to the left is bluegill lake,,,tons of bass but youll need waders.....

Chuck- I can't believe you would think of coming to town and not call!

The Willamette in Downtown Salem has been a lot of fun for variety (Steelhead, Salmon and Bass) if not a bit unpredictable and uncertain in productivity. Walter Wirth was just stocked recently, and is a better Municipal location than Walling Pond. I was thinking of maybe going up to the Champoeg State Park or Willamette Mission Park this weekend to check out their Willamette access. Both of those are just a few minutes North of town.

I need a hand
I have found 2 "walling ponds" on my maps.
They are darned near next to each other
One is almost a perfect square and the other
2 sort of haphazzard ponds joined.
Can you tell me which is which, and how do you get in ?

Its on Mcgilchrist and 16th. The parking lot is on 16th St.. you can't miss it.

I'd like to hear about champooeg park river access. From what I can remember.. there isn't a whole lot of bank. It's very steep and the water looks deep. There is a big staircase going down to a boat dock.

Mission State park has a lot of bank access. I grew up very near that park.. and plenty of spots to fish. There are trails around the whole park, and along the river, with small trails off the main trail that takes you to the water. I only caught carp when I was a kid fishing there. And if you wanted to.. you can hitch a free ride(walk or bicycle) on the ferry to get to the other side

That sorts it out. Given I'm disabled (and I don't walk so good either ) I think I will take your advice and try Mission Park. A ride on a ferry especially a free ride is always a treat.
