ODFW looking to stop "flossing"

While I agree that snagging/flossing isn't a good way to fish, how are they going to prove it?

Looks like it's just going to give more power to the authorities without really solving anything.

Its pretty obvious when you see a guy ripping his line through the water at the end of each cast, once you could see that it might have been hung up, but, the dudes that were fishing and ripping it across the upper rogue from me, it was pretty obvious.

Its not only gear fishermen, the fly guys are just as bad, running 12' of T14 and another 6 or 10 feet of leader.

There is no enforcement on flossing up here, they just turn a blind eye, plus there is not enough Conservation officers to police the area anyhow.

Personally I can't stand Flossing or Snagging :( but Oregon has way too much Government IMO :(

Just like in BC, there aren't enough enforcement officers to do a good job.

Shaving a 1/2 hour OFF of the morning and evening start/stop times, won't help much either. The officers HAVE to be there, to do any good (unless, of course, more of us call and report those poachers).

And anyone convicted of poaching a second time, should do a few months in the crowbar hotels.

Great. Now I get ducked out of an hour of fishing because of some monkey with 10 foot leader.

Andy, I've been feeling those resentments too.

Hey OFF'ers, here is contact information for one of the key decision makers on these topics. Please be polite, but feel free to voice your opinions.

I've talked to Messmer before. He tells ya what you want to hear, but the bottom line is the ODFW has their own agenda. I wrote him a letter with questions via email and he never bothered to reply. I'm sure he didn't reply so I could have no record of his statements to use in a future public meeting.

I understand where you're coming from Randy. And I have no doubt, that you are right...he wanted no paper trail.

What I forgot to mention, is that we can INUNDATE and FILL UP his mailbox to over flowing. I was also tempted to post his telephone number, so we can plague him with calls too. Both his email and phone are public record. And maybe, just maybe, if enough of us called or wrote...it would no longer be ignored.

Mr. Messmer's number is: (503) 947-6214.

We could also contact this ODFW big wig:

Ed Bowles / Fish Division Administrator / ed.bowles@state.or.us / 503-947-6206

And / or flood these numbers / emails:

Another logical attempt at law enforcement,at the expense of the legitimate fisherman. Why not just make it illegal to fish? It seems to be the direction we are heading anyway. License fees go up,funding for odfw programs and law enforcement go down.It is a frustrating downward spiral. Why not spend some time creating a volunteer, self policing, neighborhood watch type deal? I think there are plenty of good people that would jump at the chance, to be a "fishing" hall monitor.Arm them with cameras and note pads, seems like it might be effective at the meat holes:D

this is the best idea i have heard, why not let the ethical fishermen police OUR own dumbasses...there is a guy on the north umpqua who guards the dynamite hole every year from snaggers and poachers.

I see this being done occasionally but when I show up and ask them how fishing is they seem to stop for some reason. Does that mean I look intimidating or do they just get a guilty feeling and decide to change their ways? Maybe it's the camera around my neck and the fact that they just had their picture taken that makes them nervous. I have and will continue to report the suckers and the OSP thanks me every time I do it. Step up and protect what is ours while we still can!

Just my 2 cents,

GD

P.S. Maybe that's why my camera was stolen last week!

Ya, you are correct in that for sure nothing changes if folks don't try to speak up. I just meant to imply that when you engage in conversation with the ODFW be prepared to come away frustrated because what seem like easy fixes to problems wind up in a political mess of different agendas working against each other!

I wish they would! But that will never happen. Those guys involved in the gates creek unit poaching, the largest poaching operation the state has seen, were sentenced to serve time during hunting season for like five years or thereabouts...did no jail time because of overcrowding.

I think screwing us out of an hour of fishing time because of a few bad apples, is crap, and won't reduce the number of poached fish. Poachers are stillgonna fish whether it's. Legal time or not.

When it is too dark to see the poachers, it seems OSP could invest a few thousand bucks in some night vision equipment for their officers to use. They could plant themselves in the brush just feet away and not be seen while gathering evidence to bust several in one swoop Sounds like the investment would quickly pay for itself plus many times over. Then the rest of us legit anglers can fish these early and late minutes in peace.

Guys were a bit off topic here. In Oregon its the Oregon State patrol that does the vast majority of game checking (or at least fishing). OSP has officers 100% assigned to this duty. How many? No idea at this point but they drive around in white pick up trucks.

You can report a fish/game violation by pushing 911 BUT they prefer you call 1 800 452 7888. It's been a looooong time since I've called in but the longest wait I've ever had (and it was at the hatchery) was just under 15 minutes.(Illegal gear during the fly only season.)

I will take up the burden of patrolling/protecting Oregon's waterways...I just need a monthly stipend for gas, food, internet service, phone service and a good guard dog. Oh, and maybe some bait...
Seriously, I think the more fisher folk get involved with protecting our waterways the more discouraged the poachers will become. If we don't back down from their stupidity, they have to back down from our tenacity. If you aren't comfortable confronting them, at least call the number on the back of your license. Please.
