Need a change

Its been kind of a funny steel season for me, I find myself exploring, watching, smoking cigarettes... and just plain day dreaming and not really putting any real effort into fishing this winter, fishing is still one of my biggest passions but I just have felt wierd all season, so at 4 a.m this morning as I passed through the garage to my truck, I did something different, leaving my flyrod tucked safely in its holder in the corner.. I grabbed my spin gear and all my dads old spoons and headed to big creek. Hit the park at sunrise, snapped on a pink/white/yellow spoon and on my 3rd cast.. Bam! VERY nice fish heading for the hatchery at 300 miles per hr, mabe I should have put new line on, cause when I when to slow em down, he and my spoon kept going:( so time to re-rig and as I was doin so a couple guys pulled up, this time it was a castmaster I call an elton john ( you can guess why ) thats right, cause its gay and never caught a fish in its 20 yr stint in my dads gear, so with d-bag 1 and d-bag 2 standing one foot away trying to talk to me I cast into the exact same spot, and saw a flash.... quickly reeled in adjusted my cast 3 more feet upstream and let it slide in before reeling and Bam 2nd fish of the day on! four shakes of the head and he was off to join his buddy.:( so the kid next to me smiles and says " that won't happen twice in a day on these fish" and I said  and he instructs me that winters will almost never hit a spoon. and I just got lucky on that one.
So Ive decided to myth bust... Im gonna attempt to post a picture of 30 steelhead caught from tommorrow until march 26th... the last day I can fish in the lower 48 and the end of my oregon winter season. caught with only spoons, qwuickfish or hotshots... all three being lures I have been told can't catch as well as jigs, yarn, or bait. I will use no bait and no spinners. I think my heart just got back in the game!!! ( im still gonna fly fish my favorite fly spots, so don't worry onthefly.... im not turning my back on the Art.. just puttin some spice back in the game;)) things are about to get interesting..:)

Soem people just don't know. You should be able to get many fish with spoons and it will probably that one thing they haven't seen a million times and hit it. More than once I have seen guys get into steelhead using 1/4 oz spoons fishing for trout. Without even targeting steelhead and getting them on spoons should say something about there effectiveness. Well you already know you were using them today. Can't wait see all the fish porn!

for anyone wondering, you shouldnt keep fish this dark, they are very poor qaulity, but the proccess of catching this buck killed it, and I know someone who doesn't care if they are blue black and red.... so I tagged him.. cause I killed him.:(

That looks like a lot of fun. I have used spoons from time to time but without any luck. I took a class back in the 80's ( yea way back then) from Ed McQ. who used to write for the Oregonian Newspaper and he swore that spoons were the best way to get steelhead out of the Wilson river.

Big Creek, that's up north off highway 30 right? I've driven by it several times on my way home from Klaskanine river. Is there much bank access?

The best thing about spoons is they produce big fish, and natives freak for them, Hatchery runs have killed the spoon, drifting and flyfishing came to the forefront, both tactics that done correctly can almost forcefeed a hook, a spoon must be presented propperly or it simply will not work... thump, thump, thump... thats what you should be feeling in your rod if your working a spoon correctly. Bank access on big creek is great at the county park, and the boundrys can be stretched rather liberaly... if tact is employeed. I always liked the wilson as a hotshot river, you don't see many guys using them anymore though.... I might roll up to the wilson on friday.

I agree that the hatchery fish don't seem to hit spoons or anything else as hard a nat's do.

Let me know if you go friday morning I might try and meet you there. you sound like my kind of fisherman, I'd like to meet you.
