this past weekend we had a getogether for my bday as most of you know, i recieved a fly tying kit from a fellow member as a gift (thanks again andrew your the man!) i tied a ly that moring and caught 3 fish in 3 casts on it that sam evening..im hooked and have tied and stocked dries in my box and im amazed at what i can tie after two days of having materials and tools. just ordered a bunch of stuff from the caddis fly shop to stock my box instead of buying flies. its way more fun and rewarding to catch fish on what you tied. somthing that you came up with. like the elk hair caddis/mayfly hybrid that was said to closely imitate an x caddis that caught and hooke dplenty of fish for me. i will have to take pictures of my creations soon. especially the mayfly spinners in multiple colors i have tied along with the stimulators and parachute/thorax bwo with microfibbet tails. now i have somthing to do that i enjoy while im off the water waiting to fish. pictures soon to come as well as recipies for some simple but effective flies i have tied. :D

Sounds like we're bringin the vise's and materials next time we make a camping trip, I know I always regret not bringing it when I go camping.

Nice job, you have gotten very far, very quickly.

Its the other 'expensive' side of fly fishing. :) of course you can keep the costs down during the fishing season. Its when I sit at home and keep accumulating materials that it adds up. I do of course catch the most fish on my 'cheap' tied flies, but I love tying fancy looking ones for display.

Well well, that's a nice start to what has become an addiction for me and others. Several year ago I too had received a "kit" of some sorts from a neighbor friend of mine who no longer tied. After accumulating, well, hording a bit of materials, vices, tools and the such I was reminded of a guide friend from the Yakima River (Derick) about "Paying it Forward." He had taught me that you (or whoever) may not be in a position to ______ (drift, tie, cast, ect... whatever) right now, but if someday you are in that position make sure you pass along the gift!

These are excellent words and a way of thinking that I take with me MOST of the time even in everyday life. The rewards of passing on either your knowledge, skills, tools or whatever can bring about one of the best feelings you will ever feel. You never know when you will have the opportunity to brighten someone's day, month, or life. I know these words have changed my way of thinking and that was a few years back and has been with me ever since. Just the other month I gave a vise, tools and materials away to a friend who wanted to start tying and passed along the story with him all free of charge. That's how this thing works.

Have a great day and fun tying. Hope it doesn't become a chore, some may know what I'm talkn' bout. :)

Brandon,

I am glad to see that you are enjoying it. I thought long and hard about what to get you and then saw my tying kit and materials that I got back in December last year and Feb this year.I had tried three flies on it: An Elk Hair Caddis, size 10, a brown wolly bugger, size 12, and a griffiths gnat, size 12. But having two kids hanging around and a third wanting to be in daddy's arms all the time really doesn't allow me to tie flies as much as I would have liked. Plus I would rather be fishing than tying.

I know that sometimes it is hard to come by flies and I knew you were tying some flies by hand without a vice. So hey, what better gift could I give than the kit and materials to someone that I knew without a doubt would appreciate it and put it to use.

Enjoy it to it's fullest extent and make some good flies man!!

Take care.

Ha!!!! you should have seen him with his vise sitting on the cooler, losing things in his shoes...hehe. He tied with my headlight on and the lantern sitting next to him. We hit the tents and he was still sitting there tying....Good job Brandon!!!!

Hahahahah, I saw the carnage the next morning: materials all over the ground, in the kit container, semi completed flies, hahahaha. How many times did he "lose" the scissors and they were right in front of him or under some feather or something? hahahaha :lol:

Sounds like my fly tying room :D, I can also relate to the scissor situation, they could be on my lap and I wouldn't know until I get up.

I'm glad you guys/gals met Brandon :lol::lol::lol:.

Good for you,Brandon!! I have no doubt you will become a master at tying in a short time with your dedication to fishing and willingness to learn. Sorry I missed your birthday. We need to fish again soon.
