Lure suggestions?

Every lure I've used at Hagg doesn't seem to work. I don't know if I'm retrieving it wrong or something, but I don't get any bites. Any suggestions on what lures to fish at where?

If you're going for trout one thing I have found to be pretty effective is get a roostertail and cut the hook off, take the clasp off a small swivel, apply it where the hook was and put a fly on instead. One combo that works well for me is the rainbow trout color with a muddler minnow off the back. A small black roostertail with a silver blade and a stonefly nymph is good too. You can apply this to bass as well. Get a plastic worm and hook it weeedless and put it behind a spinner to match. There are a lot of possibilities. You can also make a blade spin easier on roostertail by getting some pliers and bending the end of the blade a little at a 45 degree angle. Grab the blade with the back facing you and the end of the blade pointing up. Then grab the top left corner with your pliers and bend it away from you just a little. Cheers!

Slow retrive

Slow retrive

With cold water a slow retrive is paramount, no matter what type of fish your going after; let the lure sink after you have casted it and slowly bring it back in. Also while your retriving the lure give it a pop every now and then. Good luck and tight lines.

I like to Use pink in Hagg like a pink Panther Martin<---MY favorite lure is the panther martin lures or a pink blue fox size 3. The pink has done pretty good for me and other people i have been fished at hag with. I agree with troutski on a slow pace of the lure.:)
Good luck

It ain't the lures! Water is too cold. Fish are lethargic and will not chase.

Thanks people, I'll try a few of those ideas. A few other people I've read about use Senkos. Any ideas on those?

Read up on dropshotting and rig with a 3" Senko for deep water.

But really I don't go to dropshot until post-spawn times when the majority of bass retreat to deep water sanctuaries. Right now look for drop-offs adjacent to shallow water where the fish should be staging for pre-spawn feeding. 3/8oz or 1/2oz jigs get the nod.

Ok...

Ok...

Thanks! The only problem is I don't know where the drop offs are... I don't have a boat or depth finder. I think they're by the dam somewhere, but the dropshotting is meant for like 20-40 foot depths most of the time. The dam is by 110 depth water. So I'm wondering where the not too deep dropoffs are.

Kastmasters

Kastmasters

Listen, so far yes yes and yes.... but you need some kastmasters. Two gold 1 silver, I perfer silver witha light green stipe and a gold with dark dots and a gold with one side thats half tan and half white. Cast it what 3 seconds or so and bring it in slow. No pops nothing tricky at all. Just keep it slow I catch them often like that. It might be cold at but they are still going for it.

Spinnerbaits?

Spinnerbaits?

Anyone had any success at Hagg with spinnerbaits?

Yes. In the spring time when the water is high and you are fishing the flooded grasses in the creek arms.

I'd give the blue fox a try.... would help to know what your fishing for. Trout like the blue fox spinner and the kastmaster lure. Bass? I like a lot of different spinners and I have some luck with them, I'd say that cavdad45 was on the money as far as for bass. I'd plunk a little in the grasses too, well anywhere really.

what size kastmaster

what size kastmaster

I have had sucess at hagg last year and the year before on black and gold panther martins. as well as blue fox.... Hooked a big brood this time of year last year on a blue metallic silver blade size 6 panther martin about 20 ft from shore, just after stocking.

Question for the Kastmaster specialist. I have only used them for a bit with no success, mainly because I did not give it any time.... but what size do you use, and do you use them with a swivell or tied directly to the line? and what size? brand name? or south bend?

I buy the 1/4 oz Acme Kastmaster lures. I use a swivel with a quick release safety snap. You can use a regular swivel but the quick release will help you change out lure in seconds. I like having a few different colors so I don't get bord (Gold, silver, green stripe, solid orange, and blood red).... but like everyone says the first task is getting the lure near the fish. I don't do any tricks with the Kastmast. I cast it past where I think a fish might be I let it hit the water and right away I start a slow retrieve, if your getting snags in mostly clean water speed up your retrieve a little to keep it high. You will hear that fish stay in deep waters when it is cold and this and that but trout are not like Bass and other fish that are being spoke about. Keep casting. I leave the original trebal hook on until it gets beat up but I like the size it comes with. I also attach my swival to the split ring on the lure. Some will take the split ring off but I like the action the split ring and swival create together. I will throw a kastmaster over a spinner any day of the week. kastmaster - Google Product Search here is a website with a few varations but I like the plain lure with no tube or buck tails. Hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions and I'll help where I can.

I forgot to ask species of fish. This is important because Kastmaster is not my pick at all for Bass. If your going bass fishing right now I'd use a drop shot method. You can even drop shot with a small 3-4"swim bait.... I know everyone just raised some eyebrows but try it when your bord.... it's a blast.

I caught trout all day last Saturday at Green Peter trolling with lures in 40 degree water.

You know I tried roostertails, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, topwater, plastic worms and nothing worked for me at hagg lake. I am usually fishing on the rocks at the dam and never had a bait. May be it is my technique and may be it is the fish. I was able to catch fish at the west salish pond using spinner bait so it might not be the technique but the place.

The water temp does have a lot of influence on whether Bass will chase Spinnerbaits. Drop shoting may be more effective as it is a stationary presentation. A slighty active Bass may be more likely to hit a sationary bait.

Right now a jig-n-pig is the ticket for early bass. Blue/black or green/black color combos.

Over by the damn on the rocks... Like I said and JTLunker were saying drop shotting for bass will work great. I was just talking with another guy over at Sportsmans and he was talking about drop shotting with some 4" soft worms. Was working for him also. I'm glad to see Trollin backs me up on the fact that water temp doesn't play as big of a roll on the trout.
