Good lake/pond fishing around Beaverton?

Hey guys, Great forum, been reading a while now.

I moved to Oregon from England a few years back and recently got the urge to go fishing (grew up pond fishing for carp, roach, perch, tench, bream)

Wow, everything is so different over here, float / coarse fishing seems so primitive, barley able to find the right tackle just to get started! Anyway, got my hands on a nice diawa 10ft riversider, loaded with 3.5lb line, few crappy floats and hit up a lake close by - Commenwealth Lake in Beaverton.

its been a lot of fun, I got right back into it hitting tonns of small catfish, tiny trout, pumpkinseed fish, suckerfish great stuff!

I fished the deeper water by the dock at the park entrance and hit a few 3-4lb+ sucker fish off the bottom with worms, beautiful fish, i'll post pics later.

Anyway, I've fished Commonwealth lake every day and I need a change of scenery, is there anything of its caliber as full of fish close by? Having a blast just fancy a new challenge! looking for some large still water, clean and able to float fish (not to much floating weeds and stuff) needs to be close(ish) cuz I don't drive yet and the wife gets grumpy driving me around to fish haha.

Thanks in advance!

Ahh thanks for that!!

So exciting, my dad is going to mail me some real tackle for my birthday, can't wait! difficult to accurately cast with these cheapy reels.

Heres my 2 suckers i got over the weekend, scrappy little buggers.. size 16 hook, removed the barb and landed with no net...(dont ask how) I impressed myself, and a small crowd watching hehe.

oh yea, its not very easy to take a pic of yourself holding a fish, with an iphone.... just sayin' :D

yea, me and a friend got addicted... caught just about every variety over the years, biggest I ever landed was a 14lb mirror, my friend had a 28lb mirror the same night, was awesome!

im a little lost on the rules over here, is ground baiting and feeding allowed? we'd fish and feed with boilies or ground bait with corn/particle mix - every sign i see says don't feed the wildlife, probably a dumb question, but do the fish in the lake count as wild life? I know the stuff in commonwealth would go crazy for maggots if i could feed for a few hours lol.

Think I'm going to try for carp at commonwealth this weekend, anyone have any tips? :D going to try corn on a float just off the bottom around the pier area providing the weeds let me!

No live bait? Worms are live bait.

And there's nothing wrong with floating corn right above the bottom...

no groundbaiting really changes the game, for my style of fishing at least...

We use completely different gear in the UK, match / coarse rods start around 13ft but I was used to a 15ft ultralite rod which i haven't found even anything close to that available in most sport/fishing stores ive been to. As for reels, we have specialist species / carp / feeder reels with unique torq/drag stuff on them I was really used too, again, most of the stuff I've played with over here has been really crappy chapo stuff lol though I'm guessing I'm just going to the wrong places. (I couldn't even find decent graphite reels with spare spools for different weight line!)

with my old 15ft match rod, even with the most light/delicate stick floats (2AA) I was able to cast pretty much wherever I wanted, even distance... with my current setup, unless i get it perfectly right (im out of practice and this never happens), i feel very limited.

anyone got any suggestions for this type of fishing gear in/around beaverton or portland? I'd love to go float shopping and maybe even get some decent shot's (you guys ever seen dust shots, size 6-8's? excellent for lift bites and really acruatly setting the float)

?Every thread I swear!

youkay; Im not sure I understand some of the fishing terms you use!:) Like "shots", "match/coarse"....

We have a few good carp fisherman on board, Im sure they could get ya going on the carp game as far as where to go around town for 'em (theyre everywhere!) and whats effective/legal. Im not one of 'em though...

Theres a carp thread that has links to a few more carp threads in it...lots more if ya use the search function up top.

Once you get a car, Come down here to Blue Lake.
Or we can maybe meet up on the Willy Somewhere.

Carp fishing isn't a Big Fishery at all in america, Probally 5% of Fisherman here actually try to catch carp.
Me, I love carp fishing. Its really Mixed Emotions.

But I Used to use Heavy Tackle for them, Cause I was a Noob, And Thought If I used Light rods I would lose them. Sadly, I was wrong. I can use Ultralights and catch them.

Ive caught them on Flyrod, (with bait. ;) ) and on Ultralight.
I fish for them on The Bottom. Perbaiting isn't Nesisary in Oregon, Carp here are abundant. Unlimited supply. No rules. Catch all you want, keep al you want. theres always gonna be more.

Corn is the Bait Hurr. Corn on the Bottom. Ive met a guy who used boilies and out fished me..... Greatly. he caught 6 I caught 1. He gets them from this Site. Royalcarp.Com or K1baits.com Those sites probally have the rods and stuff your looking for.
