Epic day at St. Louis...just stocked

Well the girlfriend and I headed down to Saint Louis late today after a wonderfully late sleep in, which we never do. Arrived about 1:00 and fished around for a couple of hours...very slow....3 decent sized and wonderfully colored bluegill each but nothing else on the hooks and did see anyone else land anything. Saw a half dozen or so 2+ pound largemouth cruising the shallows in different areas but not interested in anything we threw at them. (Gotta love high quality polarized glasses) Around 4:30 we are getting ready to head out and guess what pulls up....a big ole ODFW truck with a big tank on the back to stock for a kids event tomorrow. The reaction at the ponds was pretty funny.... closest thing I have ever seen to that is a hay truck at a cattle farm. This thing pulls up and suddenly people from all over the place just start wondering over...look of love and hunger in their eyes.

I have heard the that fish are crazy active and feeding right after a drop (though never experienced)....so we unpack the rods, put on fresh worms and cast out right as the truck starts dumping. The fish are instantly jumping, hitting anything on top of the water...gotta love the pellet head reaction...and also know that worm and bobber is not the way to go. We pull lines...tie on some rooster tails....and get ready for some fun. Fishing is fast and hard from the beginning. We were pulling in fish about every other cast.....with each cast getting 2-3 soft hits on the retrieve. Only a half dozen or so would I call hatchery small… most 12-14+ inches. On each retrieve you could see a half dozen or so fish chasing the lures up to about 2 foot of the bank on each cast.

About 4 of the rooster tails got hit so many times that they became “rooster without tails” before being retired to the tackle box. They were hitting anything mid/small sized and bright colors. Ended with about 3 of the most action packed hours I can ever remember at St. Louis. We must have hooked and landed 50+ fish a piece.......including the 4 biggins in the pictures below. Had several other big ones right near the bank when they spit the hooks. Glad to have been able to enjoy the fight on almost all of them but have them released for others to enjoy another time. We did of course get a lot of strange looks from people for putting back perfectly good fish. We were able to release all but three of the fish and those did go home for food with some thankful people next to us. We both have sore wrists and shoulders from casting and catching so much....and I sit here enjoying that ache... passing on the events of the day....and enjoying a good cold beer.

I was trying to convince the wife to go down there last night, I am running a Big Scout event there in a couple weeks and I wanted to scout it out a bit more... She insisted we go over to Silver Creek Reservoir instead... Didn't even get a hit.. I'm going to try to get down there today to talk to the odfw boys..

The fish are like the complete opposite on the coast. When the stocking truck shows up everyone gangs around and starts throwing everything they got at those fish but they don't damn worth a damn. But anyway nice fish :)

Which pond!?!?

I believe they stocked 3&6. The trophy size went into three. The pond I am calling three is the one directly north of the parking area and attendant trailer; 6 directly east.
