Describe what are "nice size brookies" to you? Fishing from a boat, float tube, bank, wading? Fly, bait, or tackle?

Looking for fish that are at least 14 inches. Lakes or rivers. Any kind of tackle. I have it all

You won't find any that large, on the west side of the Cascades.

I know of one spot on Hood where I've picked up an occasional 14" brookie. It's a bit of a hike, about 2.5 miles one way. Water is cold, need to pack waders along for the hike. Have to be in the water to cast, and bank drops off fast. More like an oversized pond with 50 or so brookies living in it. Hard to catch any of them. Only thing they would bite is a size 18 black ant fished wet and stationary 3 feet under a strike indicator. Barely worth the effort.

Whoops. My bad. Timothy Lake does have some brookies of the caliber requested.

I used to catch a good number of Brookies @ Crane..... A buddy caught one over 4#s with 2# of bass fry in its belly. that was 20 years ago now.

@CatchEm what part of the state do you live in? How far are you willing to travel? More information will help us, to help you.

Hosmer lake has Brookies that large. Fish the channel, dodge the paddle boarders, watch your back cast in the reeds. It's fly fishing only, the water is gin clear. 5x tippet is ok, but 6x is better. That one pick up an egg sucking leach. Its a beautiful lake, but the fishing can very tough.

Had to reply to this. I don't know about Oregon I came here in 93 but have never fished. But, I was raised in Burney CA near Hat Creek and my friends were in charge of Crystal Lake fish hatchery and Baum Lake. In my teens we used to go hand fishing when the creeks would go down in summer, Caught really big brookies in Burney Creek. I know some were 2 lbs. We caught Browns under rocks and small dam ledges as large as 8 pounds by hand. I got thrown off Bing Crosbys rising river ranch for wandering through the woods by mistake. He, leonard meyer and phil harris Took us teens by shotgun point, drove us ten miles down a dirt logging road, took out gear and left us to walk home. Man the town was mad at him. Anyway, Aint fished in almost 30 years except for sturgeon once at the bay mouth. Caught and released a bunch of them. Would love to get a brookie again but Im in a wheelchair and can go about 100 feet on crutches. Anywhere in N Oregon where a handicapped geezer could et a brook?

No help on the brookies, but hearing about Bing as an abusive father I find your story easily believed.

There are a couple of lakes in the southern Cascades where you can pick up brook trout near the creek inlets and outlets. There are also a couple of access points along Lake Creek, between Diamond and Lemolo Lakes, as well as Little Butte Creek to the south. I believe you said that you are in the Portland area though, so that might be a bit farther of a trek than you are looking for.

Do you mind me asking your age? My dad is his early 70's and was born in Burney, just wondering if you might know him. Totally loves Brook trout, too!

In fact, I was once escorted of Bing Crosbys ranch at gun point. As a teen 3 of us were duck hunting on a neighbors ranch and strayed onto his land. No fences. He and Leonard Meyers and another guy ambushed us, took out guns and drove us up a dirt road about 15 miles from Burney and let us go. The town was mad at him. A month later I saw him shooting deer from a helicopter.

Does Gary Callahan ring any bells? My dad was born there, and lived there through 1979. I was born on Hatchet Mt., but they moved when I was 2.
