Bottom Fishing Charter

Went with Troutmasta, our ladyfrineds and their family to Newport on Sunday for a four hour bottom fishing charter in Newport. Started at 7:30am in the bay and went out about 20 minutes before we started fishing. It seemed like our substitute captain couldn't find the hot spot right away so we moved around a lot for the first two hours. The farther south we went, the fishing got better. Near the end, we went just west of seal rock and everyone was pulling up doubles. Troutmasta cought a Ling and a quill back aka punk rock fish and I pulled up a monster sea bass. Troutmasta's girlfriend barely escaped the puke of a sea sick little girl, who then spent the rest of the trip on the railing. Great trip...I need a bigger freezer.

wow NICE fish! Mind if I ask who you chartered with? The reason I ask is my GF and I are going to be in Newport the weekend of the 27th for our annual anniversery get away. I plan on grabbing a bit off the public pier and fishing off the jetty.... but was also thinking of going out for some bottom fishing just to ensure I get some fish .

Youve got some knowledge to share time to step up. Lots of fly fisherman on the forum, and a few of those people like you who dont kill every thing they catch.(not me) You'll fit right in. Congrats bud no longer a virgin.

B CAREFULL. 15 foor swells and easly 20 foot breakers. Breaking waves all the way across the bar. The ride in was nerve racking.

Looks like y'all got a few very nice rockfish... but that ling looks a little on the small side... you sure it was legal?

I'm plannning on getting a group together for a bottom fishing trip out of Yaquina Bay once I have a cash flow again. I try to get in at least one a year.

23 inches. They are very carefull on the charter boat.

Welcome to the forum Smartin9, and your a fly guy too that's great! That bottom fishing is a kick. We hit that area sometimes on our way back in from chasing coho. There is a nice spot north of Seal Rock call Margretta Reef that I like to fish. Wouldn't be suprised if thats where your charter started at. Glad you guys had a good time and again welcome.
