well day started off great first cast hooked into a nice fish and someone trieed to help on the bank and busted the line. about 45 min later had a big ol swing and a miss next cast hooked into a fish brought it in old spawner silver. bite was good for about 2 hours and then that was it all day. seen 15 or so fish pulled out in that first 2 hours and only 3 more the rest of the day. was way to many people there fishing going to give it a try again tommorow befor i have to work i the afternoon hopefully the crowds wont be so bad.

I may be down in the late morning as I'm trying to get out at least once this next week. I haven't seen the weather report yet but I think Monday may be my best chance. I usually drive down the Wilson River Hwy and stop at a couple of holes that might hold my fall chinook. Then head over to the NFN. If you don't know me I drive a gray Tacoma 4X4 with a canopy and have a target on the back of my fishing vest.

There are no more steelhead at the hatchery! The last one was caught as I walked up to the river today about 11:30AM. I saw at least a dozen fish on the bank and not a one was caught after I arrived so they must be done!

Now do I really want to drive all that way again, just to get there before they are all gone for the day?

The NFN is always a dog and pony show until christmas... then you can have the whole empty river to yourself... here's a tip, fish above the hatchery, the fish pass by, get confused and mill around in the mile of river above... and sometimes a nate, this long {...............................................................} will come say hi to ya- But as for the crowds.. its always a *** show every single day anywhere near the hatchery, I mean sheesh, they post how the rivers doing daily on the telephone.. radio fish.. just a bunch of radio fish-

i got one just below the hatchery sat night but sat afternoon i took the magic mile hike upstream above the hatch and had no luck but the fish phone sounded very promising and if i could get the time off i would absolutely be there this wk

Evidently you do need to get there early! I was there before 7:30 this morning and the crowd was large but I found a place between two willing bankers and they let me catch my fish steel in over a year! (correction it was the first I could tag this year, I got one on the Big D in Sept on a home made spinner)

NorthForkRecycle.jpg

It was a recycled buck with plenty of juice still to give, and he had sea lice on him? Does that mean he may have been recycled last year and was returning again?

At any rate it was fun while it lasted. I spent an hour or more drifting eggs under a bobber trying for another one then took a lunch break. About 11AM I broke out the 8wt fly rod and gave it a short workout, The wind was just too strong to even be able to mend my line upriver. (wind was blowing downriver if you haven't guessed) I met a few fellow OFFer's while there and enjoyed the day. It did appear that the bite really dies OFF after ten or so.

Great job guys! I was down there about 8. There was about 6/7 fish dead on the disabled platform, about 20 guys keeping them company it seemed. Below that about an angler every 30 feet up till the no trespassing sign. I ended up heading west a few miles and climbed down the hill. No luck. Headed home around noon, with a stop or two on the Wilson, which is blown it appears.
