  • Large trout stocked in valley ponds; one close to Portland

About 200 brood trout will be stocked next week by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in three Willamette Valley ponds.

More than five dozen of them will land in St. Louis Ponds, a short drive south of Portland. Anglers headed there should be aware that a gate to the ponds is closed for the winter and a hike is necessary to reach the stocking location.

Brood trout are used in department hatcheries to produce fish for stocking in ponds, lakes and some streams around the state. The hatchery spawning period is drawing to a close and surplus trout are trucked to open waters for anglers to catch.

These rainbows will also go into Cottage Grove and Junction City ponds. Each will be stocked with 70 brooders and 64 are scheduled for St. Louis' Pond no. 6.

The agency typically plants fish early in the week, usually Monday or Tuesday.

St. Louis Ponds are west of Interstate 5, about two miles west of Gervais off US 99E.

Drive south on Interstate 5 to Woodburn and turn east to 99E or South on 99E from Oregon City or Canby.

From Gervais, drive west on St. Louis Road, cross the freeway then turn left onto Tesch Lane, just short of the railroad tracks.

The last mile of graveled road is gated and closed after Oct. 1.

Pond 6 is directly east of the main parking area, which features a kiosk and map showing pond numbers and species found in each.

Oregon will offer a free-fishing weekend Nov. 25 and 26 for Thanksgiving holiday anglers, then another New Year's Eve and Day.

Stocking schedules for the November dates will be announced next week.

Anyone call the stocking number to see if they did stock JC today.
I'd call myself but one, I don't have the number and two, even if I had the number, i would be unable to hear the phone due to deafness and they aren't set up for text.
