I will be going to the coast in a few weeks and was wondering what I should fish for out of yaquina bay or the siletz river bay. I will be staying there for a week and my dad wont be with me. So I have to fish by myself and Have never surf fished before. I was also wondering what kind of pole to use. I have an extremely long pole that says it is good for 10 to 25 pound lines. Or I have some extremely light poles or some poles in between. I have used the big pole off the jettie before and it worked great with sand shrimp.

Cool Slipped past us...

I don't know how you slipped past all of us...I just found your post. First of all, welcome to the forum. Someone should always be able to give you some kind of input.
As far as the Siletz is concerned, I read that Steelhead and Sea-run Cutthroat trout are running. Yaquina River still has resident cuts in the basin. Be sure to read the regs for bait restrictions. I kon't have any info on the bay.
I would never presume to be any kind of expert on poles. That being said, I would go with a known producer. I am hoping some of our own resident experts will help you out with that kind of info.
Hope some of this will help you out and hope it isn't too late. Let us know how you did and maybe post some pics?

Yaquina is one of my favorite place to fish. I have a really close friend that inherited a nice piece of close to river front property only like 9 miles up river from the bay. His section ends and 100' feet of pasture belongs to the closest neighbor, but we fish the holy cheese out of the stretch we can, and if you fish it right, there are some absolute monster cutties movin through it. I would bet that everyday we had the patterns covered, it was 15-20 fish, 5 hour days...I know not a huge number for some folks on here, but pretty much my best fishing has come from his hole. Besides kokanee back when the limit was 25 at Merwin and Billy... We normally fly fish the river with some real basic trout flies, in as many colors you can get them in. And 6 wt. rods. For wet I like Isonychia Emergers, Pheasant Tails, A Paranymph in March Brown especially, and this little guy called WD-40. Serendipity in green & pink, Prince Nymphs, & Hares Ears kill. The X, or Headlight Caddis(same fly, one has a bead-head), Elk Hair, and of all things the Proven Killer are excellent dry flies. I called my friend and he gave me this list, so don't think I know anything, but how to cast, and catch fish that I can trick just enough. I am not too great at fly fishing, but I enjoy it alot...Anyhoo, if the water is running turbid, toss an orange or green spinner in the mix, a little more vis. go with dark. Yellow-Jacket Pautzkes of all thing are really good too, the two times I've used them anyways. If anything, rig a worm like a bass grub, and give 'er a hang in the current...If you are stuck to the bays, hit Siletz, and bring your steelhead gear, like Barb said above they are running up that river right now, and from what I hear it is not as bad as it has been in some past years. I dunno, I have only fished it once for trout so I couldn't tell ya. Good luck where ever you end up. But if you have fly gear, bring it!
