Question Too cold for Trout this weekend?

was gonna take my sons to St. Louis Ponds or Hagg for trout, from the shore...is it going to be too cold, or do we just fish deeper? Was gonna use bobbers/powerbait, maybe some spinners (slowly) - am I wasting my time? Trying to get my sons hooked on fishing (I'm still new myself) but 4 hours in 40 degrees and rain without a bit... might not be the hook I'm looking for

Unfortunately the answer to all of those questions is that it varies. Whether that's from hour to hour, or day to day, trout at these temperatures can be doing darn near anything, darn near anywhere in the water column, and well you guessed it darn near anytime.

The fish will seek out a source of warmer water if available, whether that's dark rocks/mud, an inlet not supplied by snow run off, or even near the surface in open water on sunny days.

Post Water Temp.....

It has been my belief that fish mainly Trout, are very opportunistic feeders - I think most fish are. My point is this, I have tried to catch fish from the couch in the middle of a spring time weather hick-up and been skunked each time. On the other hand I have been out on the water on a perfect day been skunked some of the time. The hardest thing to do is to match your time on the water with the perfect weather patterns, we have a finite amount of time to dedicate to our hobby so I say go each time you get a chance go and experiment until you are successful. My biggest Large Mouth Bass to date was caught in the middle of December at Dorena, floating a night crawler on a bobber set up for Trout near a point with a bush on it....the fish didn't even fight; I thought I had a very large stick fish - but to my surprise it was a huge Bass. If nothing else you will get more practice casting and cussing than you will at home. I have never regretted going fishing but have kicked my self in butt for not going ...

You might get a surprise out of the local stocked ponds. They have produced very well over the last week so I wouldn't think that the bite would be completely gone. Then again... Im in my heated apartment browsing the cabelas magazine this weekend hahaha.

Howdy Allee

On a cold day when i get the urge to go fishin' i jus layer my clothing, warm boots & a ski cap. Years ago i bought a handwarmer............

When in Doubt,
Catch a Trout...................

Just a matter of being at the right place, at the right time, with the right bait............

Have a Great Time fishin' for You & Your Family......................

Sometimes the way i rig fer Trout............i use a 1/4 oz sliding sinker, a barrel swivel, then 2' of leader with hook on end. at times i thread a small marshmellow over the hook to the hook eye ( this helps raise the hook off the bottom ) then a chunk of nightcrawler on hook...........or use PowerBait, etc...............chartreuse, orange, or rainbow has worked well for me..........

Default thanks, Hawk - I'll make sure to try that

to make sure I have it...

hook (10? 12?) with powerbait at end of 2' ft leader, tied to barrel swivel, with egg (1/8th?) on the other side of the barrel. With bobber, or just toss it out and the egg pulls it down to 2ft off the floor?

dumb questions I know - thanks for the help

Size 10 hook is ok............most times i use a 8 or 6.........i haven't used one but i think a treble hook is legal. You mite want to check the Regulations.......

1/8 ounce egg sliding sinker is fine...........at times i use 1/4 oz cuz i can cast it farther............i use a bullet or worm sliding sinker mostly.

I don't use a bobber with the sliding sinker............

You have the rig setup right.............

Best O Luck ..............Catch a Big'Un............

thanks Hawk - we caught a my younger sons first trout ever... in about 4 min... I was still repacking the tackle box and he goes "I got one" (and I'm slow to respond thinking he's caught a log or something) and the I see silver flash and all three of us (his older brother too) start jumping it was great - he's very proud. Next time, with pictures.

thanks to all for the ongoing help - really appreciate it
