For the last two weeks my five-year-old daughter has been begging me to take her fishing. Everyday that I pick her up from after-school day care, the weather is nice and beautiful. But you know what they call two days of rain in Oregon? The weekend. And this one didn't promise to be too good for her either.
So I took her to the Indian Springs Trout Farm and let her catch and loose, and catch and capture a few trout. She was thrilled, I was a hero, Mom got 7 nice rainbows to cook up, and I am only out twenty bucks. That kind of cheating is okay, ain't it? Just trying to get rid of the cabin-fever skunk for a kindergartener. |

I say that any fish is a good fish. I found it hard to keep my 12 year old interested if there is no bite. It is all about the experiance at that age. As long as it is positive, they will have fond memories of it. Nice work Cavdad.

I found the same thing- kids under 12 need some action to keep from being bored. I am often tempted myself to stop at the U-Catch on Highway 22 after a bad day...

That is in no way cheating. She had fun, you had fun, and everyone got to eat well. It's not like you were in some kind of derby or tournament...it was just a father/daughter day.

And just thinking about it a little more, I'd still say it wasn't cheating, even for an adult. It's just another step somewhere in between the wild fish in the stream, and the farmed fish in the grocery store.

What you did is definitely not cheating! It seemed like your entire family had a great time--and that is the important thing. It also sounds like your daughter is already hooked on to fishing.
![]() I am glad someone mentioned that it's even OK for adults to go to a trout farm once in a while. I recall one summer when I was skunked so many times that I had to go to a trout farm to redeem myself. It was great to feel the shaking of a fishing rod and seeing a fish attached to the end of the line. It motivated me to go out more to the lakes and rivers and not give up. I hope this does not degrade my worthiness as a fisherman. |
