Default Question about rooster tails ...

I've noticed rooster tails mentioned on a few of these "best" lures lists. I've got a couple that the blades don't spin real well on. They are the little generic ones you get at Fred Meyers for like $1.50. I've done some research on this and I've seen a lot of articles saying that if you jerk the rod after the lure hits the water (kind of like your setting a hook) it will start the balde spinning properly. Anybody agree with this or have a better suggestion?
    Thanks as always!

By giving the rod a small jerk after you let the spinner settle to the bottom it does start the blade to spinning and lets you go with a slower retrieve than you otherwise would to get the blades going. Of course the retrieval speed is based on the fish and how finnicky they are on any given day. Ive caught trout on spinners with a fast retrieve and ive caught them on a slow retrieve and on a medium paced retrieve. Just gotta experiment.

However if the blades arent spinning at all make sure there's no gunk, line, rust, etc blocking the blades from spinning, double check to make sure there are no bends in the body of the spinner that might affect it. Above all remember, you get what you pay for, the cheap spinners dont always work well, but sometimes they do.
If all goes well this is my last year in Oregon. Message me if you want to go fishing, all i need is the day off and a babysitter. I still want to land a pacific salmon before i leave, preferably one i can taste! In about a year I am hoping to move back to Michigan.

    Default panther martin

I always bring a yellow-bodied with red-dots panther martin. Silver blade. No feathers necessary. Small for small shallow creeks and larger for rivers. Caught almost every species of trout I can think of in Oregon on this. Even Steelhead. The blades always spin better than a rooster-tail and has out-performed for me. Small-mouth prefer the rooster tail though.

Does anyone make custom handmade spinners for Trout like people do for Steelhead? I am planning another Steelhead swap, but will happily change it to a Trout swap if people are interested...

Red wedding ring is about my favorive!
I also love the Acme Sidewinder, and so do the bigger trout, though they are becoming hard to find.

One of the things I learned was to put a small bend in the blade of the newer Roostertail lures. Just a gentle arc and they will usually spin at any speed. I do want to make this statement however, I have a black one that refuses to spin nicely no matter what I do to it, even 'Carp Spit' didn't help it. I will conquer it some day!
