I'm taking my boys to Prineville this weekend and was wondering if anyone has any tips on where I might have the best chance of getting them into some rainbows (or any kind of trout)? Last time I was there I had a little success trolling bouyant minnows along the shore across from the resort, but I felt that was blind luck. If someone has any advice I'd really appreciate it. I want our first official "guys only weekend" to include a nice dinner straight off the stringer!

Izzy,
I've had good luck straight across from the resort right by the stone cliffs. The water is deep their. We anchored and send down power bait just off the bottom. I've done this a couple of times but it was in the summer and I don't know if the fish will be that low with all the cold weather. I know it is a good area. Good luck to you and your boys Irishrover |

Try the Crooked River below the dam and into town. I grew up there and back then you could fish with bait and keep but it is such a fly fishing mecca now it may have changed. Just be careful on the road it's very windy and narrow as you approach the dam. You can always catch trout in the creek that runs through town and there is a bike path that follows it for miles. They stock it every year and I caught some 16'' fish when I was a kid. As far as the lake goes it's pretty big so just about anywhere you could get a fish I'm sure. At the head of it where the river runs in is great catfish and crappie fishing. I used catch loads of cats out there with my grandfather.
If you can fish it your best bet would be the Crooked River. A buddies cousin caught a 36'' trout on a crawfish tail just above a spillway and I caught a 22'' trout just below one on a worm and crawfish smelly jelly. Also my first big fish on a fly when I was 16 (18") And it is just a beautiful place to fish. I really do miss it. ![]()
