Default Timothy Report 7-13-2008

The first thing I noticed upon arriving at the lake was that
1.) the outflow is kind of strange, some kind of sprinkler or something!
2.) You can get most of the way if not all of the way down to the river by the outflow!

the outflow sprinkler thing!

After passing over the dam and heading to the south side of the lake we stopped at the aptly named Hood View Campground. How would you like to have a picnic at this spot!

The boat launch at the Hood View and the others that we saw were all similar, mostly just shallow slope made up of gravel.

Though something I noticed while taking pictures was all the crayfish-pot bouys

And next to the launch parking lot was this sign. 13 miles might be a bit much for me on foot but take a mountain bike out and I'm sure one could explore all the shoreline in a single day no problem.

And towards the end of the day we ended up back by the dam, in particular the fishing pier, where we saw the lone hook-up occur. As we arrived a nice gentleman got a solid hook-up but it ran under the cables that hold the pier in place and it was lost. Apparently it had been a pretty slow day for everyone.

And of course our lone catch of the day a single little crayfish. Actually they were so plentiful that it wasn't much of a challenge, my wife decided to bring this one up to show our daughter.

I don't know when I'm going back to Timothy lake again but I definitely want to, the only real problem is that it's just so darn far. I don't want to even think about how much the gas for our trip today was, and that was with freely coasting down the 7% downgrades !

Yes, great report, great photos! The spillway sprinkler thing on your way in is fairly strange. I once heard a Ranger talking about to some other campers and he said that he got told they do it that way to keep erosion to a minimum right at the base of the outflow. I guess to preserve the riverbed/banks? I dunno, looks interesting to say the least. You should get up there when it really get hopping with campers. Even if there are only ten or fifteen sites with boats, and poles, every high schooler in a 40 mile radius knows to bring their pots! And it becomes a real hazard to navigate in a powered craft. I use the pontoon and troll for kokanee and spin for trout, but even I get a little tangled in an 8 footer. Great fishing if you can get out on the water, even 100 yards on a tube. Do bring the mountain bike, as the trail is well maintained, and the ride is pretty easy. Lots of families riding and hiking, just keep your head up when you ride. Almost been hit by hot rodders comin down the trail packin all of my fishin gear once or twice. Again great thread, it really make me want to go to Timothy, i just won't have time to until after the first week of august! Work is killin me!!!

I suspected it was for the erosion. Of course that bites because I'd expect the browns to hang out down there looking for tasty little morsels and that big sprinkler may make it hard to get close enough.
