Visting Oregon Sept 21-28th!

Hello! A friend and I will be flying into Portland from Austin, TX on Sept 21! I'm very excited to visit Oregon for the first time, I've heard so many great things about your state! While I'm there I plan to do a good amount of fishing and I'm trying to be as prepared as I can when I arrive. I'd love to hook a good Salmon as I haven't been Salmon fishing since I was 10 (now 28) when I moved to Texas from Anchorage, AK. Also, I'd love to shoot for some Steelhead and trout as well. My friend is not much of a fisher but is pretty much there to hike and camp. The plan is to dedicate at least one full day to fishing, probably hire a guide to ensure I don't leave empty handed. The rest of the time I'll be looking to hike and camp in areas with good fishing. Maybe some spots on the beach, river, or lakes we could do a day hike to. We will also have a rental car so traveling throughout the state should not be a problem. I'm doing a good amount of research on the forum but there is so much information it's easy to get lost! I have done some decent amount of trout and bass spin and fly fishing in TX, OK, and CO but nothing big like a Chinook. Any advice on guides, lures, destinations, ect is much appreciated!

Cheers,
Eric

I've not been out on a guided trip but one name that stands out as a favorite around here seems to be Ed Fast. Welcome to the forum, hope you have a great visit!

I went with Marvin's Guide Service once, who has a section on the guide's bay part of the forum. I learned a lot and he's in the Portland area. I'm sure he will get you into some salmon,

Thanks! I will look into both Ed and Marvin! Would ya'll recommend spin fishing mostly for Salmon/Steelhead and saving the fly for trout?

I hired Ed for a trip last year and had a good time and he worked hard to get us into fish. Another guide I have heard good things about is Brian Marz. He does fly fishing trips and has a very informative website. There are a lot of good hike and cast rivers. Check into the coastal rivers for searun cutthroats. Your timing will be great for them.

Look up Brandon glass from team hookup and gone catching with Cameron black. Both are highly revered guides. Scheduling may be an issue. So sooner the better on booking the trip.

As far as trout. Look up central Oregon trout fishing. It is chocked full of amazing lakes close together.
First two that comes to mind are diamond lake and east lake.
Both have large trout in the 14"-20"+ range.

Around Portland is hagg lake. This is my goto lake when the weather cools.
Many holdovers in the 12"-20"+ range.
Plus u being from Texas you may be interested to know hagg has a very healthy small mouth population and put out the Oregon record.

Good luck! Please tell us how u did!

Awesome, I will definitely look into these spots. I am thinking we will go check out Mt Hood, I hear there are lots of lakes and streams in the area. As far as guide trips, do ya'll mostly float or wade? I've seen quite a few fishing charters too for trolling but that's not really my fancy.

If you want to catch a salmon, take your boat rental budget and apply it to hiring a guide on the Columbia River. With only a few days available, it could prove difficult to get a salmon on your own. There's so many fish right now that most guides will be doing well. Ed Fast usually takes September off and in fact, I think he may be in Alaska right now anyway. I haven't fished with Marvin but I have fished next to him last season and he was doing well. Good luck trying to get an open date with Brandon or Jack Glass. :) Most guides are pretty booked up so don't wait until the day before to try to book a trip, start calling now. But if you want to give it a go by yourself, Oxbow Park on the Sandy would be a good place to try for some Coho (and Chinook) - check the regs first. But honestly, unless you're already geared up for salmon or steelhead fishing, it could be a disappointment to try to figure it out in a two day window. Get a guide. But trout, that's an easy one do solo with little knowledge of the area and limited gear. If you need gear while in Portland, go to Fisherman's Marine or the Sportsman's Warehouse. There are other places but those two will have the largest selections, locations and staff on hand to help.

If you want to catch some trout, here's a good link for a planning aid. It has stocking schedules for lakes including Mt Hood as well as information on their locations. The other link is to Fishing Resources that has a lot of good links including a Google Earth map with locations on it.
