Trout fishing in astoria

Folks -

I’m looking for trout fishing in the vicinity of Astoria, Oregon.

The Oregon fishing regulations are a mess to understand . . . let alone to decipher the magic decoding machine . . . if one exists.

Any help would be muchly appreciated !

Note : I’m 72 year of age & I used to fishing for both steelhead & trout all year. A severe stroke 12 years ago put an end to my fishings.

But now I’m in the saddle for resuming to fish.

Welcome to OFF. Congrats on getting better!

Are you looking to fish in lakes or streams? Do you need places that are accessible for disabled folks?

Both. Rivers and lakes.

I’m technically disabled.

On top of my stroke I have a hip replacement . . .

But I prefer to say “I’m missing a step”.

Gone are the days of waist high freezing water in wader.

But . . .

I walk carefully & slowly.

Moderate brush-busting I can do.

BTW . . . I fly fish for choice.

Ha ha ha...Yogi was da man! You have a great outlook.

Seems like fly fishing would largely be a stream thing...unless you have a flotation device for lakes. I've watched peeps fling their bug wands, from lakeside banks. But that didn't look very effective to me.

I'm not familiar with the Astoria area, but thes might be worth a go:

Above Youngs River falls
• Catch-and-release all year
for trout, artificial flies and
lures only.

Above Saddle Mt State Park
access bridge (on Lewis & Clark River)
• Open all year for trout.
• Catch-and-release only.
• Artificial flies and lures only.

That's all that I can find with a quick mapquest search, and looking at the online ODFW reg's. I'll have to let others take it from here.

Tight lines and let us know where you go, and how you do.

FYI, Saddle Mountain is gated off at hwy 26…. Closed until further notice due to storm damage and rock slides. Been this way for two years now. Which is a bummer.. but add in the covid closure you have an area that has seen zero pressure in years. I want to ride my bike in, but there’s a bunch of squatters at the gate. I wouldn’t trust leaving my truck within half a mile of there.
