Keeper sturgeon 02-23-08

Well, I finally got a keeper in my own boat yesterday in the Willamette.

I put in at the launch in Milwaukie and found out that the dock that was there is nowhere to be found.

Glad I have a metal boat so beaching it was no big deal. My buddy found a good bite just downstream from there two days before by the golf course so I tried it out. Found some shakers but nothing big.

Decided to move upstream around the corner to some deep water and promptly snagged up twice in a row so I bailed out of that spot and made the run down to the hole I was fishing at last weekend. I hooked and landed some very nice 40" shakers there so I gave it a shot.

I was using flattened anchovies with a two worm wrap and 5oz. of lead.

After two nice shakers, I rigged up my last fresh anchovie with worms tied on with streching string and flattened it out with my boot and sent it to the bottom.

It was down for maybe thirty seconds and my pole goes tap-tap-tap. I picked it up and went tap-tap again and I put the set on it and hooked up.

The fish put up a great fight on my salmon rod with many good hard runs back to the bottom and after about ten minutes I had it to the net. I was by my self and the one man net rodeo is quite the challange.

Here is a bent pole pic of the battle and another of me and the fish. It mesured out at 48 1/2".

It was wonderful day on the river and I am now going to put some fish in the brine and make some sturgeon candy!

Congrats. That sure is a beautiful fish. I have never fished for sturgeon, so hearing about 40" shakers sounds like an oxymoron (I understand the size limits...but it's still funny to read). Congrats again and thanks for the pics and the great post.

Good Job!!! I can't wait to catch my 1st keeper. I just can't seem to catch a break...all I ever catch are either to small or to big. One of these days!
