Question Sturgeon Bank Fishing @ Kelley Pt Park?

In years past I heard there was a good bank fishing opportunity for sturgeon at Kelley Point Park in Portland. I seem to recall someone telling me to fish the Willamette just upstream from the Columbia. Does anyone know of a sturgeon hole there? If so is there a certain tidal flow to fish? Any info would be great. I don't have a boat and would like to try for some more sturgeon before the July 31 deadline.

I was there Saturday fishing with light line for whatever I could catch. Up Down stream from me (toward the Columbia) there was a group fishing for Sturgeon. I did not see them catch anything but they claimed that they've caught them there before.
I hooked something with a nightcrawler on the bottom that was going to run off with my 4 lb line until I broke it off. I have no idea what it was, but it didn't seem to care that I was yanking away trying to make it turn! Do Sturgeon munch crawlers? It could have been anything I guess - big river probably demands heavier line!

I think a warren wench with 1500 # s/s cable would be all you would need for fishing from the bank for Sturgeon...

I have fished for Sturgeon using night crawlers before and had many bites and brought in one. I use 30 lb tough line on an extra heavy rod. I am in the market for a surf rod about 11'. Those are supposed to work well for casting way out there. There are Sturg all up and down the Willy from the falls to the Columbia. They are fun to catch. You could have had a channel cat or a big SM Bass. If you want to try for them make sure use a barbless hook, check your regs for more rules and regs on the Willamette.

Big Grin Open until 2008!!!

Here's the update from ODFW:

Sturgeon fishery on Columbia River from Wauna Powerlines to Bonneville open seven days per week through end of the year

Clackamas, Ore. —State fishery officials from Oregon and Washington decided today to expand retention of sturgeon seven days per week on the mainstem Columbia River from Wauna powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam beginning Monday, Oct. 1 through Dec. 31.

“Lower than anticipated catches in this area have made it possible for us to allow more days to the fishery so anglers can access the available quota,” says Chris Kern, ODFW Assistant Columbia River Fisheries Manager.

Following a joint state hearing last month, managers modified the fishery to allow the retention of sturgeon in this area seven days per week through Sept. 30. In that hearing, it was decided that managers would review the fishery at the end of September to decide whether to continue the seven-day-per-week retention fishery, or to stick with the original four-day-per-week fishery for the remainder of the year. Because catches for August and September have remained within expectations, managers believe that catches for the remainder of the year will also remain within the established quota for this area with the expanded opportunity.

The area affected is the mainstem Columbia River from the Wauna powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam including all adjacent Washington tributaries, and the lower Willamette River upstream to Willamette Falls and Multnomah Channel.

Fish managers set the Columbia River sturgeon fishery harvest guidelines based on recent population estimates, escapement needs, and harvest allocation agreements between area-specific fisheries.

Additional information may also be found on ODFW's Web page at Fish Division: Ocean Salmon and Columbia River Program

Does this mean that there could be sturgeon in Eugene Springfiled? Like below Dexter or any big fat hole or run along the Willy here? Am I mistaken???
