Yes! I am wondering the same thing. This is my first year fishing for steelies and want to start off on a good note. I have been to McIver about 5 times with no luck during December.

Sandy and McIvor are MUCH better bets in Jan than Dec. But if`n yerr wantin coastal steel head over to the Nestucca. From there you can hit 3 rivers as well. I would say spend a day on that system. You`ll find water to your liking that will surely have steel available. Fish hard and move on to the next spot. Walk up and down said hole/run/drift changing presentations each time you`ve worked it top to bottom and back(or vice verse).
If ya hit a spot right, on the drop after a good freshet, then staying in 1 hole/run/drift is beneficial as fish will be on the move. This won`t be the better strategy tomorrow. Also don`t be afraid to work water that has been,,,OR water below or above well fished holes. YOU may have the killer scent/fly/jig of the day. Just be mindful, ask fellow fishermen if they have/will be fishin it....blah blah blah:)

I spent the day on the Nestucca with no fish to show for it. I was up high with my fly rod and there were very few people up high. Most of the boats were at or below Three Rivers. Water was in great shape and color was near perfect!

Thanks to all! Not knowing the area and rarely getting out there is a challenge for me.
I appreciate the more detailed info I've received. No, no secret spots specifically but at least to the areas.

Well, no steel but a hell of a time and the Nestucca is beautiful! Lots of drift boats. Very few bankers on the upper section and didn't see anyone get anything.
Found a spot (suggested) and caught my first Bull Trout! 16 incher on an egg pattern. I was stoked! Didn't expect Bull Trout to have as many teeth! I'm used to thumbing trout but now know Bull Trout are sharper and longer!
Kept getting hits after that, many hitting my indicator... Lot an egg and sunk a hook into my thumb (deep) when I slipped tying the knot. Had to use my hemostats to get it out...
Sorry, no porn - damn camera battery died on me and I couldn't take a pic from my phone since roaming depleted the battery - I usually turn it off and check for messages periodically but not this time.
I want to say thanks to those who gave me some hints!
I'm definitely hooked on the Nestecca! Tons of places to stop at.

First outing to the Tucca? Cool! It is an awesome river. My paternal grandparents lived on the Little Tucca, just north of Hebo. LOVED THAT PLACE AS A STOMPING GROUND!!!

And, you didn't get skunked. So, all in all a good day. Nice.

Good job on getting out there and wetting a line as well as getting to play a fish on a beautiful river on a great day.
Just so you know, there are no bull trout on the Nestucca River....and Bull Trout have a line of very small teeth that are only on the jaw line... What you most likely caught was a cutthroat...not trying to take anything away from your day as a 16" trout from a "new" river is an accomplishment. Just trying to pass on a little bit of knowledge.
