First trout of '15 is a beauty

After a week out of town with no fishing I was ready to drop a fly in the Mac when I got home. I had to wait for my 10 yr old's basketball game to end but by 2:30 we were on the water. I had one on really quick and it seemed like a nice fish but wiggled off my glo bug after a minute. We fished without action for about another hour before this guy hit a stonefly nymph dead drifted in a flat.

This is a record trout for me on that particular float. Measured 16"

Beautiful trout! Especially for the McKenzie, where fish are mostly on the small side. I've heard the Mac is slow lately...is it?

Depends on the day. I've heard of some good days lately but the March brown hatch has definitely not started yet. Once that happens the river will turn on.

Regarding average size, it's all relative. I consider the fish on the mckenzie to be average not small. My record reside on the entire mckenzie system is 18" with average around 10 or 11. I think that is pretty typical for Oregon. I could be wrong though and I know there are plenty of systems with larger averages but plenty with smaller too.

Good point for discussion though.

With the weather we've been having the next couple weeks could be incredible. We saw a few March Browns yesterday but not enough to get the fish looking up. I have an upriver tip for you when you get down here. Hit me up when you're ready.

Catching a 16" trout in a river >>> Catching a 16+ inch trout in a stocked pond

Just my opinion. Nice fish bud
