    Luckiamute river

I spent yesterday at the Luckiamute river with my wife. It was a beautifill sunny winter day. Upper 40s, water 43. The place is just beautifull. The water in the river was cristal clear. The river is not deep thoug. Don't know if there are fish there (didn't catch any didn't see any).

Hey! Don't go giving away my secret fishing rivers!!

The Luckiamute picks up when the weather gets warmer. I fish the lower river by Adair Village (Helmick Park, between Monmouth and Corvallis) for summer smallmouth.

When the weather warms up try fishing along the cover on the right (if you're facing Monmouth) on the Corvallis side of the river. There are a couple more holes upstream from that, the best one is straight back from the restrooms at Helmick Park. There's a trail that leaves the grass there that drops you down to a big calm pool where lots of kids swim. Go about 10 yards upstream of that and cast along the cover on the opposite side of the bank. I've had a lot of luck with crawdad imitations and yellow z-rays with red dots.

I'm up for it- Late June through late August seem to be best, usually on overcast days or just before sundown.

Don't feel too bad about it. The first time I was there I was knocking the bass and pike minnows dead. Found out the next day that it is artificial flies and lures only.....
It will be available after opening day for streams, but trout are catch and release year round there.

There's trout if you get up around Fall City. There's smallmouth and squawfish in the rest of it.

My favorite place to fish for smallmouth on the Luckiamute is right where it flows into the Willamette at Buena Vista. Put in at the ferry and motor up (or row) into the mouth and it is great stuff. One evening at dusk I tied on a really small rust colored jig that I tied (kinda like a crappie jig) and skimmed it along the top in about 2'' strips very fast and I hit fish after fish after fish. All nice smallmouth. Ran into a guy one time that is part of a little club in the valley and they have tournaments there every now and then. If your boat floats high enough you can get about a mile and a half up stream. One afternoon there I saw a smallmouth that was so damn massive I though it was a carp at first! Great stuff check it out.
