Open Seat for Sturgeon Wed. 11/07/07

After talking to a couple friends about salmon fishing on the Yaquina and other rivers in that area I decided to change my plans. I'll be going up to the Gilbert boat ramp on Sauvie Island and trying for Sturgeon. As always, I have extra gear if need be, and I'm not expecting any money for expences. As always also, I would appreciate some gas money but it's not manditory. If you're interested shoot me a PM and we'll make the necessary arrangements.

I just can't ever seem to post open seats on days anyone else has off. Oh well! One of these days things will work out. I've fished with Troutski and Dixiefisher and had a real good time with both! I'd really like to get to know more of the members. But I understand that most work during the week and have weekends off. In my case that's not true. I work in retail, and have days off during the week and very seldom have a day off on a weekend. I hope we can work things out in the future and get together for a fishing trip!

I'm taking my camera and hopefully we'll catch something we can keep. Or possibly an over sized one I can get a good pic of. I'll make sure to post the results of our excursion. Tight Lines to All!!!

We we're on the water at 8AM and immediately we were getting bites. But they were small and hard to hook up with. We did land a couple shakers, and my Dad had a good one on but it tangled in the anchor rope and got away. It was a bit cold until the fog burned off about 1:30 PM. We got burnt out on rebaiting our hooks around 3PM and called it a day. It was pretty uneventful but we had a good time anyway. I didn't take any pics of the shakers as I was hoping to get something a little bigger. But, it wasn't our day. Maybe next time!!!

Right on Ron, at least you got out on the water, I didn't even do that this week. I feel withdraw coming on, when you talk about shakers what size are we talking ? When I was in Canada last year they called 18 to 24" Trout shakers...give me a shaker every time

Just curious.

When talking sturgeon...a shaker is any fish less than the minimum size, or a fish less than 45 inches. A peeler is a fish larger than the maximum size, or any fish over 60 inches.

The shakers we caught were in the 30 inch range. They put up a good fight and it makes going worth while. I'm still waiting for a keeper though. It will happen one of these days!

I was skunked 4 or 5 times in a row before I caught another shaker! Then I got 8 fish in a week and a half! Two keeper sized in a week. It will come if you are out there enough! I found maintaining a really sharp hook and making sure you have a good portion of your hooks gap open. I have seen earthworms work really well too if you need a nice price saver. Good luck in your future outings!
