Default Understanding Tides

I'm not quite sure I get how tides work. For instance, high tide on Sunday the 2nd at Yaquina is at 7:40 AM and low tide is 3:22 PM. Does this mean the tide will be high until 3:22 PM? If not when will the tide begin to go out?

Thanks in advance.

You almost have to experience a few different tides to get the hang of it. Like today we fished from low slack 1:30PM (the lowest point ) through a few hours of incoming 4:00PM, The water was really ripping out until about 1:15 then all the sudden it just stopped and turned into a lake for about an hour or so (low slack) The it slowly started to turn and come back in. By the time we were done it was running in at a pretty fast rate. High tide was predicted for 8:00 pm ish
The water is almost always running in or out. I have found the slack times are usually the best for fishing and or crabbing.
Sounds clear as mud to me!

The tide starts to go out after the high tide time and stops going out at the low tide time. After that, the tide begins to come back in (reversing the cycle). As noted by McMudpuddle, tide changes can happen quickly, so you need to be careful.

Sweet graphical analysis. Very scientific, but it gets the picture/idea across.
