Here a couple of kelp greenling I caught off the Newport jetty. What an experience it is to cast into the ocean and pull up something so alien looking. I had no idea what these were until I looked them up after that trip. Great eating. Deep fried in batter! I miss my old red Suzuki(rig in the background)

Heck yeah! I need to learn more about it. I heard that while fishing for these there are also the Ling Cod that come into the bays right under the Jetty rocks to feed and spawn. I was using my ultralite but now I think I will have to put together a larger outfit for those bad boys. The best time to fish on the jetty is April May June when the water is calmer. Can't wait! I think I would also like to try a fly rod for them. Maybe roll casting with a 6-7-8? weight and a large shrimp like fly and a sink tip line. I check these two sites everyday when I get up and before bed. Great idea of what the coast is up to.....

What baits are best for jetty fishing? Can you use a standard spinning set-up, as long as it is salt resistant?

You have to rinse your gear off in fresh water really well if you want it to last. I'm not sure if it rated for salt though. I used sand shrimp but honestly out of 2 dozen I would only real back up maybe 4 of those sand shrimp. You have to secure them very well and at the fishing shop down past the Rogue brewery where the boat launch is at the south side of the Yaquina bay bridge I found some sand shrimp hooks. They have a needle that threads thru the body of the sandshrimp and then there is a doulble hook at the end of it. I use a crappie rig setup. Not Crap, but the fish crappie. Check Fred Meyers for these. The fish love sand shrimp but I think it would be worth tying a fly that looks like one and soaking it in shrimp oil. I have heard clam necks will stay on the hook longer.

I have been fishing the north jetty at Barview ( just north of Tillamook ) for
years - the Lings come in close to the rocks to spawn in spring. Fish the bay side of the jetty with a lead - head jig and a 4-6 in. white plastic bass worm threaded on - WHAMMO ! no bait necessary . Sometimes there are so many you can see them finning on the surface. There are lenghth restrictions . You can see them by walking out onto the jetty to where it elbows inwards. BE CAREFULL ! I got knocked off by a sneaker wave once - it was not much fun. I use a 8' 6 ' HEAVY salmon rod with at least 20lb. on . They have sharp teeth and you have to drag them up over the rocks. MMMM GOOD ! On the ocean side of the jetty you can land plenty of surf perch on clam necks. Fish for these VERY CLOSE to the beach as they run in the first set of breakers in schools. If you see seals in the surf , that is what they are after. TIGHT LINES ! |

I've tried fishing for bottom fish at Yaquina Bay several times with no luck. I only tried for a short period between pulling my crab traps. I've heard from another that I should try sand shrimp. I guess next time I go I'll have to get some and give it a try.
A friend told me I should go over at night and fish floating Rapalas for Sea Bass. He says you can't hardly keep them off your line. Has anyone ever used this technique? I may have to try it this summer!

I've only been out in the ocean a few times myself. The 1st was on a charter boat. When we left Yaquina bay and went over the bar the boat was almost verticle going over the bar. All the flags were up, but the captain said he'd been out in worse weather. There was 20 ft. swells and the wind was making them 20 ft. higher. The boat was a 52 footer, (the Illwaco Indian), but it felt as if we were on a cork in the bathtub. We'd be up on top then down to the bottom and the waves would be atleast 40 ft. over us. It was scary. But, we limited out on sea bass in 1 1/2 hrs. I was glad it was a short trip. I was the only one that didn't get sick, but I didn't feel very good. A couple of years ago I was invited to go out on a family outing. Two of my uncles have 20 ft. boats and they go out all the time. We went out over the Columbia bar. I was scared to death the first day, since I had heard all the stories of how dangerous that bar is. But, we went out everyday except one for a week. Fishing wasn't very good, but we caught some really big crabs out in the ocean. I think we only got 6 salmon in 7 days, between 9 of us in 2 boats. I have a great respect for the ocean! But, one of these days when the oceans calm I might even try to take my boat out. My Dad's had it out to the rock pile 3 times. I'd like to do that, I love Sea Bass!
