Default July 08 - Crab and clam digging..

So we fired up the poorly neglected winnebago friday and she started up right away - Good omen? I'd say so..
Then when we go to check the generator, we didn't even need starter fluid! This trip was a good one in my book before we'd left the driveway.

Got to the coast saturday early afternoon and just spent the day relaxing, We cooked dinner and watched a beautiful orange/red and purple sunset...

Sunday(today): 7:00am loading up the boat and bugging everyone else to get moving. On the water with gear set no later than 8.. dropped an anchor and bottomfished/jigged for herring while the pots sat a half hour, absolutely no luck catching any food fish. but there's Looots of herring to be sabiki'd.
First pot - 3males off the measuring scale, Woohoo! We had caught the tide as it was heading out so as many of you know we definately had a productive (note: Busy) day. We were off the water at noon with Plenty. Worst pot of the day had atleast a dozen throwbacks. GREAT Day to be on the water too, There was hardly any wind until right as we got to our last set of pulls..
Did I mention it was my wife's FIRST Crabbing trip?!? Yeah I know I'm a slacker for having not taken her, she didnt want to go until now - But I'll have no problem "convincing" her to go again. I was half surprised she wanted a pair of gloves so that she could sort crab also!
To tell you guys the truth, she thought the red rock crab were so much more interesting. that's all she was looking for on the second half of the day.. "Who cares about big male dungeness, those red ones look awesome".

You'd think I'd have tired her out after the crabbing, but noo She messed up and told me she hadn't gone clamming either. So we drove a whole, probably 1/8th of a mile to a reasonable looking spot. hopped out, grabbed the bags and the One clam shovel I had brought and wandered on down to the water.
We spent the first 10 minutes looking like idiots until we got the hang of it, Definately Crunched alot of razors. But we had a Great time doing it!
only spent 1hr digging, until my shoulder wanted no more (between the pot pulling and that, Phew). with the 3 of us (father, wife, and I) on the boat crabbing and the adition of my mom to the group for clamming I'd say we did alright in the span of 1/4 of one day. Too bad we didnt catch any bottom fish though..

Grand total: 16dungeness, 6rock crab, 20 razors, 48"steamers"..
Dinner will be done any minute
Pictures will be on the next post..

Short version: went to beach, caught crab, weather was great, what's stopping ya, GO CRABBING!

here's those pics I Promised:

On a side note: We used squawfish and some squid for extra stink as our bait today. Probably my favorite thing to do with squaw's, freeze 'em and turn them into crab later.

p.s. Remember to double check that your crab are all of legal sex and size, as well as look under seats/gear and make sure you have no "stowaways" as you're heading back in to dock. You Alot of the time Will get checked by fish and game or state police, is one crab worth the ticket? Even worse if it could be as easily avoided as looking under a bench.
