Weekly KRKT radio channel 99.9 FM has a fishing report by the captain of the Mariner, one of Tradewins charter boats. The other day I heard the report and he said that the numbers of Kokanee in Lake Billy Chinook are down. Because of this they are changing the limit from 25 kokanee per day and 5 trout, to 5 fish per day in any configuration of trout and kokanee. They're hoping that after a time the numbers will raise back up, but I dought will ever see the limit back to 25 fish per day. I love fishing that lake but it's a long way to drive for only 5 fish total per day.

The change takes effect May 1st. It has a lot to do with the new fish ladder program and the reintroduction of chinook smolt. Kokanee fishing has been OK this spring, might be a good choice for next weekend since access will be limited for the Cascade trout opener.

So does anyone know why ODFW doesn't seem to try limits between 5 fish and 25 fish? Say 10, 15, or 20, which would seem to allow them to respond to changes in a fishery before it truly requires such a drastic drop in the limit.

It's ODFW. Do you really have to ask that question?

5 fish per day per person isn't enough for dinner? I think 5 fish a day is more reasonable than closing the fishery down for a few years until it recovers.

We posted something on the reduction at Fish Frontiers Blog: News and Information a couple of weeks ago. None of us have any solid contacts in that area, however, so we just posted the ODFW news. Does anyone know a good contact we can use for that area, such as a guide or tackle shop?
Great forums, by the way, seems like everyone gets along real well. Good stuff! |
