Default Springer Help!?!

Hey there OFF'ers! I'm new to the site and loving every bit of it so far! I have a question for you ol' hands with springer fishin! I'm supposed to go try for some spring chinook later this week on the Willy river! my brother-in-law and I are gonna head out of Meldrum Bar. We are both somewhat beginners, more me than him, but could definitely use some pointers on catchin salmon on the willamette! I dont think he's caught a chinook in a few years and I know I never have. This will be my third year trying for salmon and I'm hopin to not put another goose egg on my scoreboard To put it plainly, im lookin for any kind of tips on tackle or tactic! Thanks for anything, even a "good luck"!

Read the post by McMudpuddle about green label behind a flasher but do tactics on the columbia transfer to the willamette? or do you fish them differently?

Ill post my results either way, hopefully good results!

Two good options from a boat. Anchor or troll.
On Anchor with two lines in the water I would consider running a K 11 (for the Steel head) and a K 15 Kwikfish, any color so long as it is green, 27 inch lead line 4-6 oz of lead, and a 4 ft leader. Some guys wrap them I don't, personal preference. I use 30lb or bigger line and leader, these fish don't seem to be leader shy. Look for the other boats anchored and join the party, don't be afraid to try any place from the west Linn Bridge down , so long as you find 14-16 ft of water and some current good enough to make stuff work, just take a good look before you drop anchor, you maybe in the middle of a trolling lane. A bog Rainbow spinner with some blue on it is a good option too
On the troll I drag cured prawns on a mooching rig with a "sticker" to keep them running as motionless as possible, faced down river, back of the prawn up towards the surface. Some guys add a spin and glow for flash, I do in real dirty water conditions. I run this with a jumbo jet diver on a slider 50ft behind the boat, back troll or in the slower water a very slow forward troll.
There are as many ways to do this as there are fisherman, watch what the successful guys are doing and follow suit. I don't think it's cheating as long as you don't go troll right next to a guy five minutes after he hooks up. Just check the depth where he hooked up and what length lead line and how heavy lead he is fishing with. I have found depth, color and current speed seem to be the key.
Get it in front of a biter and Fish on!!

Big Grin

Wow! That is way more info than I expected anyone to give! I come from a place where people dont 'catch and tell' so pretty much everyone is on their own! This is great!! Thanks a billion Puddle, and hopefully i'll go out and make you the foremost expert on OFF for Willy Springers!!

PS- May the Fish be with you!
