Default How Chuck caught a salmon in Hills Creek res.

Today Chuck and I were fishing in the Hills Creek res. (Chuck, thanks one more time). That was fun! The lake is just amazing! The pictures are below. I'm leaving the story telling part to Chuck.

Default Little Ice Age at Hills Creek

Got out this morning with Anatoliy, what a trip. The water temp. at the boat lounch was 34 degrees and the outside air was hovering around 30 degrees, had a nice early morning fog on the water. We launched the boat at about 8:30 and headed to the back, can't help myself - it is just a must for me. Got to my trolling start point and we tossed out some spoons and started the slow troll to the confluence of the Middle Fork of the Willy. The water temp. dropped to 33 degrees and the wasn't a fish to be found, once we made it to the shallows, the fish started to appear on the screen, no surface action except for the occasional ice burg, fished for about four hours and nothing tossed spoons, spinners and even ate some of our lunch. Nothing........I think the fish were hibernating, even brought out the pee bucket and still nothing. Anatoliy came up with the idea of looking for some warmer water near the dam....so off we go, with the wind chill factor it had to be 25 below zero at 30 mph, thank god for the propane heater. Made it to the dam and started trolling and the fish were every where, the water was a blistering 44 degrees and way off color, compared to the back which was jade green. We trolled through schools of fish that reached from the surface to 210 feet. Lead core line, long lining, and dragging 2 oz. of weight with over 150 feet of line out.........still not a hit. We found a school of fish between 50 and 180 feet and started jigging with worms, Nordic jigs, Anatoliy even through some power bait to the bottom and still nothing..By now we were totally frustrated. We decided to find a place we could anchor and throw some lures and bottom fish. We found a very nice point with plenty of fish hanging around 15 to 30 feet. We tried power bait on the bottom and a Night crawler under a bobber, then started tossing lures......still nothing. I must admit their wasn't that afternoon wind that usually comes up at Hills Creek, thank God, that would have been the back breaker. It was getting time for me to leave and we finely saw a coupe of fish hitting the surface so I pulled out my favorite lure(Gold Spoon,Little Cleo) and started trolling around these points and the flats, wouldn't you now it 15 min. before I had to leave I finely hook a fish....YAHOO. A pretty nice Land Locked Salmon, not the biggest one in the world, but the skunk was off the boat. We finished the last half hour trolling Lil Cleo's and not another hit. Still all and all a great day on the water, met a great guy and had some wonder moments. You never know what kind of person you will meet at a boat launch, but it was a day I will remember for a very long time. Thank you very much Anatoliy, next time we will do better, we will wait for the weather to warm up and the ice on the lake to turn back in to liquid. Here are a couple of pictures from the trip. Hope you enjoy them - we sure did taking them.

Chuck

Chuck and Anitoliy, I am jealous, despite your luck. I am sure the next time you pair up you will do better.

Remember, the camera adds ten pounds, except to a fish.
