Launched at daylight at the Pekin Ferry Ramp(i.e. no tweakers!)on Saturday morning. Only one other trailer in the lot. Started trolling upstream with wiggle warts and buddy Dale with a small trout spoon.
Just around the corner above the East Fork Dale jumps up- fish on! A very sluggish coho comes to the boat- but a nice one! ![]() Good way to start the day. We've trolled here many times with no luck 'till today. We thanked the rain gods for bringing fish into the river. Another hour or so went by until we were just above the I-5 bridge and cousin Mike sees his rod torque over and a big fish flops in the water behind the boat. His lure was in only 3-4 ft. of water that we just trolled over. It only lasted about a minute though and it let loose. It was bigger than the fish we had in the boat. When we got just above the gravel bar(just below the Woodland bridge) by the airport, in barely 3ft. of water Mike gets another fish on! He brings in this nice coho. ![]() Don't know what we're doing different than usual but it's working- we're in fish heaven today! Then we anchored above the bridge in the middle of the river so we could plunk and cast both sides of the boat. The plunkies, with eggs and shrimp were catching sculpin and squawfish so I startd casting the orange wiggle wart around. About 20 casts later I hooked a fish at the end of the retrieve right next to the boat. A big one- pulled the anchor and followed it around (8lb. test)- it was a 15-20lb. chinook (I can guess trout by inches better than salmon by lbs.!) Forgot to snap a quick pic in our hurry to return it to the river. After a couple more sucker fish and squawfish we moved upriver 100yds. and anchored again. The wigglewart had no effect, nor did a bobber and jig. The plunkies caught a couple small trout. I switched to an orange #4 Blue Fox spinner and maybe 10 casts later hooked a small coho- about 20 inches or so- it got close enough to see it and then it let go. We dropped down about 100ft. and I cast some more. Third cast with the spinner and fish on! Change that to BIG fish on! Chinese fire drill/reel in lines/pullanchor/start motor/trip over everybody and everything in boat, chase fish down aways (still 8lb. test) and landed this beauty steelhead! ![]() We trolled about halfway back down to the ramp and called it a night. Saw one bankie during the day who said he had caught two steelhead overnight and one guy was anchored below the I-5 bridge casting wigglewarts- he said he had lost one fish. No one else around for the day. If us stumbling and bumbling trout fishermen can catch coho, chinook and steelhead in one day- you probably can too! There must be lots of fish if even we can hook'em up like we did! Go get'em! Jim ] |
