I have been told the best way to catch springers in the Sandy river is to plunk? But I cant stand bait "Bait and wait" style fishing. I am new to the salmonid game and I have never caught a Chinook but I have caught steelhead. Can I use my steelhead gear to catch springers? Eggs or Shrimp? I am going to drift the sandy on monday if anyone would like to join me.

It depends on what you have as steelhead gear. It will most likely work, just be on the light side.
now plunking being the best way is wrong. plunking is a good way to waste a day next to a river relaxing, not a good way to consistantly catch fish. Don't get me wrong some plunkers seem to get lucky and find travel lanes more often than your average plunker, but a plunker that consistantly catches chinook is something I've never truthfully heard of. (consistanly means every day or 3 outta 4 trips Atleast in my opinion.) you couldn't have me believe that plunking is more efficient than nearly any method we use out of a boat in the sandy. from the bank, drift fishing and float fishing with spinners close behind are more productive than plunking. I will either be on the sandy or on the clackamas monday in my sled. |

If your fishing from shore, my vote is for bobbers with eggs or Jigs. At least your doing something...best of luck and post some pictures of your first hog.
