Suggestion:

Don't try to go kokanee fishing in a float tube!

From a float tube?????? Maybe jigging would be the best method- otherwise you have to keep kicking fast enough to make a wedding ring spin constantly.

Suggestion:

don't go to Detroit for your first try kokanee fishing- Green Peter or Merwin would be better first choices IMO.

Suggestion:

watch for an open seat at Green Peter, Detroit, or Merwin and go out in a boat- WITH a fishfinder, WITH downriggers, WITH motor!

Not saying you CAN'T catch a kokanee from a float tube- it's just that it will be a very frustrating experience for a novice koke fisherman. Not to mention that generally lakes with kokanne in them are usually HUGE lakes- subject to wind and waves and traveling distances not suitable for float tubing.

I'm sure an experienced koke fisherman with the challenge put before him, could put some fish in the net- but he would know the exact location of some schools of fish and at what depth they were holding- before he went kicking those fins to exhaustion!

Better to climb into your float tube up in the Santiam Arm of Detroit and catch trout all day long!

well, kokanee tend to congregate in the depths where trout not so much. I saw a map of the kokanee fishing in a lake and it was in 100' plus depths

edit: if i remember correctly, the map i was looking at was Odell

It surely is "possible" from the tube- if you know where the fish are and at what depth- you could easily jig for them from the tube. From the bank.....I'd rather play Powerball than guess the odds of that one!

You'd have more luck accidently catching one of the landlocked chinook that are in there- while enjoying the day fishing for trout. They're WAY bigger than kokanee anyway!
