I use monofoliment line (4 pound test). Now I found out that braided line are stronger and thiner. So it looks obvious that to change to braided line is a good idea. However I'm suspecting there is something... Why then people still use monofoliment? Is there a trick/secret????

I have some braided line on a few reels, but I like the stretch that mono has. That and I haven't had any fish break my mono other than when my knot fails. I am sure there are other reasons for mono devotion as well.

I use mostly jigs for steelhead and bobber and egg for salmon. I switched to braided line this year, 20lb test that's 6lb diameter. The only problem i had was learning the proper knot to use when attaching the leader to the main line. Other than that it's great when you use a bobber because your line floats and won't get ahead of your presentation. I love it for that type of fishing.

I learned the Blood know not long ago and think it would be a good choice to join those lines.

Do you need to use leader with it? And if so wouldn't that defeat the part of the purpose of stronger line since the leader is still the weak point. Or are you using braided leader? Troutski mentioned a swivel and long mono leader when using spinners, does the swivel pass through the eyes without problem cast after cast (or maybe I just use lighter gear with smaller eyes)? Is there any problems with not using leader? Thanks, Im clueless

I never ever cast a swivel through my guides as I did one one rod and it broke the ceramic in the eyelet. Even if you have metal you can still burr it up and that will degrade your line.
As far as line, I have never really gotten into braided. I can see the no stretch advantage, how susceptible to twisting is it? I like the chance of a big fish being able to break my line, having to treat them gingerly is where the fun is at for me. I guess I'm a light tackle guy.

I admit I tried real hard to like braided line. On paper it seems very nice.
I have switched it all back to mono. the problems I had were just to numerous. Hard to tie the knots I know and trust. Very susceptible to wind knots, rats nesting, looping over the end of the pole. very hard to get a nice clean cut, it always frayed just enough to be a pain. |

2 yrs. ago I switched to braided line for my level winds and spinning reels - I will never go back ! It lasts a long time and does not degrade in water and sunlight. I can cast just as far as mono . I use 50lb. Tuff Line green. On spinning reels it does not " loop off " of the spool before you even get a chance to cast. On level winds it seems easier to repair a bird's nest. However , never use it for leader , if you hang up you will never get your rig back. When you set the hook it only takes a flick of your wrist , do not jerk back hard or you can snap your leader off. I have buried the hook in nooks that were 50-80 yds. away from me ( remember there is NO stretch ) .
As far as knots go I only use 2 types - egg knot for the leader and the overhand Palomer for everything else. I have caught a lot of salmon in my day 90% bank , and wish I had switched a long time ago. 2 yrs. ago I lost a big springer because my main mono line had a little nick in it from sinking and rubbing on rocks - that would not have happened with braided. Do not get braided heavier than 50 or you will not be able to get the bobber stop on, as far as fraying goes you must cut with really sharp scissors - I got some " sea scissors" from Cabelas - they work great. Is is amazing to me how many fish I have seen lost because of poor knot tying , I am thinking of having knot tying classes and charging for them, I would get rich ! The bottom line is that when I hook a big nook on braided with a 30 lb. leader that fish is not going anywhere but the B.B.Q. |
