Very informative. I know that the color always changes a lot the later it gets into summer eventually turning a 'tea' color and the fish don't fight as hard. Also every spring about this time there are huge clumps of that slimy green algae at the surface. It seems this pond has some sort of sustained oxygen depletion problem and goes through the described cycle every year.

My friend I think you have solved my riddle. The fish seemingly never get big because the largest ones probably die off every fall. Thank you!

Over the years i've gotten much pleasure watching the life thrive in ponds.
Years ago at a pond there were numerous dead fish in the spring. There was a slight flow into the pond from an artesian spring. We opened up the spring & routed the flow to pond better. There was more oxygen/higher water level. Life in the pond did better.

A friend has a spring fed pond. Fish were dying years ago. I suggested he try a small submersible pump from Sears & recyle water into the pond with a jet hose nozzle. Also plant some water lilies & cat-tails. His pond is doing Fine..................
