Wink Tale of an ordinary gimp

I guess this rant is sort of an introduction. If you haven't guessed by my user name, I'm a bit of a smart-ass about my condition: I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 1997. That was a big bummer given that I was a physically active gym rat who loved to back-pack, bicycle, mountaineer, swim. fish, and hunt. I got to do plenty of this growing-up a US Forest Service brat; however, I want to do more; especially the fishin' stuff, but first, I need to find a place I can go.

Not disabled enough?

Is the Oregon Disabilities hunting and fishing permit a myth? Per the instructions on the application, I provided the state with "written certification from a licensed physician (my neurologist) [that states that I am] permanently unable to walk without the assistance of a cane. However, Oregon refuses to provide me with a Disabilities Hunting and Fishing Permit because I'm not disabled enough; that is, I can walk far enough without my cane to fish or hunt anywhere in this sometimes rough and steep land. Where are these places?

Even with my stick (my cane) there are a lot of places that my gimp-ass can't get too; you know, the choice Steelhead spots on the Wilson off Hwy 6. Although I'd like to save some money by getting what the law says I deserve, I have bigger problems: I've lived in Oregon over four years and I haven't caught one fish.

I don't know, maybe I need to give the state my sob story, then they might give my sorry-ass some pity, tell me where a gimp can go and catch fish in the Hillsboro area (not the Forest Grove dump.., I mean not Dorman's pond, either).

While my cheap-ass is paying full price for a fishin' license, maybe some of my fellow fisher-folk here could give me some advice on where I could catch some trout that I could eat (even little brookies) without killing myself getting to the spot? I like spin-fishing with lures or a fly and bobber.

In the meantime, my lovely wife and I are going to Timothy lake the last weekend of June; she's never eaten crawdads before, so I need to catch us a few of them to snack on. But first, I need to get some fish guts to bait the trap. I've never been to Timothy lake. We will be staying on the south shore of the lake. Are there good places on the shore to fish in this area, or is it too crowded?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I can't help you much with spots as I'm down in Salem and new to Oregon as well.

Welcome to the forum. Keep that smart assed attitude and you should be OK

If you find a place where you could get to with a little help, let me know. I have a 4 wheel drive and a big backpack!

Cool Gimp with a 'tude!

Whew! It took some time but I finally found a resourse for you to find access for yourself. Look up Boat Escape; Ultimate Oregon Boating, Camping, Fishing Resource go to the bery bottom of the page and click on "Handi-", on the next page, click on the cute little wheelchair, next page, click on the district you want to fish in, next page, click on any of the parks and areas to find out the info and location.
Welcome to OFF. Hopefully you will find spots to dunk your line and quit whining. LOL!!!! At least re-direct that 'tude toward the fish and take home a HUGE one! Post pics, huh?

You are most welcome,my friend. I figure all the "challenged" fishing folks need to stick together. Although I am not bound to a wheelchair or cane, I have limitations also. My hips and knees don't work like they used to. I am all too familiar with the frustration of not being able to get to where the fish are. I just can't climb up and down the banks like I used to do. I bought a boat with the money from my mom's estate, but haven't been able to use it this spring....yet. But I am planning on taking it out soon. Maybe we can get a bunch of members together at the "handi" parks and have a fish fry. Sounds like fun.
Stay strong.

You might try Prescott beach,You can pretty much drive right up to it.You can catch salmon, steelhead and sturgeon right off the beach. It's between St helens and rainer on the columbia. It can get crowded at times but I have seen a lot of fish caught there.Mostly on spin and glo's.Check out the locals there most of them are willing to help.I haven't been there for awhile but my friends go there a lot,And come back with some nice fish.Good luck.

What's wrong with Dorman pond? Just wondering. I have drove by it a few and times and fished it once with no luck. I had my 3 kids by myself and the weather wasn't great so we just tried right next to the car for a hour w/o a bite.

I've fished Dorman's several times, and all I've done is lose a couple of lures, but that ain't my issue with it; my issue is all the garbage that people dispose of out there; which, I have the obsessive-compulsive thing to pick-up as much as I can.., but you know.

The bottom line is that there really isn't anything wrong with Dorman's pond, except for gimps like me griping about the excessive trash and going there and being skunked multiple times.

You should find lots of room to fish wherever you are at at Timothy. The shorelines are rarely crowded- maybe the most people are near the boat ramps (there's four of them)- people park their lawn chairs and coolers and enjoy the day there.

Standard powerbait rigs should catch fish nearly anywhere. The fish there love shiny lures also- throw everything you got out there- something will work! Good Luck!
