Woot!!! I'm going to Florida in October! I'm going to save up, buy a baitcaster, and try to catch them 15 pound lunkers in Florida's Everglades! There's snook, redfish, and bass! Right now, I only got 2 decent spinning rods and reels, 1 for bass/trout/steelhead and the other for trout/panfish. I need some better tackle so I'm savin up! I'll post the picture if I catch one of them lunkers! They grow huge in Florida! And I get a free 5 star hotel room! Right on the Beach! If anyone has any experience in fishing Florida, please help, because I really want to fight a 10-15 pound bass or snook(they eat basically the same stuff when it comes to lures). Wish me luck!

Are you staying in the Ft. Lauderdale area? If so, there is a BassPro Shops right there in Davie. Good place to pick up a baitcaster, but bring a good medium weight spinning rod for fishing shiners.
Look at google maps for your hotel. Look at all the water. Most of it is fishable ands accessable. I highly recommend fishing the New River Canal system as it has bass, butterfly peacocks, mayan cychlids, snook, redfish, and even tarpon. Another good spot is the canal (can't remember the canal number off hand) right where Butterfly World is in Pompano Beach. Awesome spot for peacocks and largemouth bass. I would say for lures to get spinnerbaits, Rat-L-traps, jerkbait minnows, Chug Bugs, Pop-R's, the smaller Heddon Torpedos, and the mid-size Zara Spook or another stickbait that you can "walk-the-dog" with. Gold scale, bone, and silver are good color choices. Bigger plastic worms like 10-12inch Culprits in typical southern shades like Tequila Sunrise or Plum Shad, though they are only good for largemouth as everything else tends to ignore them. I tried a few smaller plastics like we use here and caught a few Spotted Tilapia. Two great references I can give you are: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and calling Everglades Pro Bass in Davie, Florida. The website is Florida's Game Commission and they want you to catch fish and their site has lots of downloadable pdf stuff. Look at all of it. To hit the jackpot, go to "fishing", when the next page comes up highlight "freshwater fishing." Great stuff in there. The other is a baitshop I recommend as they put me on fish and answer all my questions. Don't buy your tackle here!!! Buy it down there! The retail prices for fishing lures is about 25% cheaper than Joe's, Sportsman's, or Fishermens. My avatar was taken in the parking lot of Butterfly World. Enjoy!!! I'm flying down for Labor Day weekend to catch some more peacocks, bass, and snook. By the way, fishing with live shiners is very addictive, but be warned the medium size (best for peacocks) is $9/dozen. ![]() ![]() BTW instead of releasing any cychlid, oscar, or tilapia. Keep them for tarpon bait, they love them! Last edited by cavdad45 : 06-14-2008 at 04:29 PM. |

Thanks for all the tips! Do you need a boat to fish? All the fishing shows I've watched that are in florida are in the everglades, which your need a boat to fish in.

A boat is not needed down there to work most of the canals. I fish from the shore down there.
Occassionally, you may have to chase away an iguana or two. |

Eek... I don't like big lizard thingamajigs...
I just found where my hotel is, it's in Hollywood. There are lots of little sqaure ponds and canal things all over the place... Are there fish in all of them? Ooooooooooooooo that beach looks pretty perrtyful... Lol Fort lauderdale(i can't stand laughing at that name) is 10 miles north of Hollywood, I'm lookin for a shorter distance, maybe even a walk because we only have 1 car to drive since we probably are going to rent one(the families going). Our hotel is right on the beach I think. There is a long canal that runs parallel to the ocean all the way to Fort Lauderdale. Is that the fishing spot you're talkin about?

Your right there just head northwest toward Dania Beach (Bass Pro Shops) and then Griffin Rd. to New River canal.
There is a nice boardwalk right there in Hollywood for sightseeing and sunrises, not sunsets. If you go straight North to Ft. Lauderdale's beach area there are some real inexpensive saltwater party boats or you can charter a real nice fishing trip in the ocean for a trophy. Personally I love the canals. As far as Okeechobee and the Everglades the water is down considerable at the Big O and most of the boat ramps are high and dry. They are in desperate need of a hurricane to refill the lake. If you go to the Everglades there is a spot where you can rent a boat to fish or fish near their docks. We just took the airboat ride and looked for gators. Then we stopped at their wildlife park and saw their old mama gators and petted the baby and juvenile gators. I believe the place was called Sawgrass Recreation Area or something like that. I think I found the canal, it runs right by the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport right?
I got I got spinnerbaits, bombers, senkos, repalas, in-line spinners, grubs, and the GULP 2-inch chartruese minnow imitations. Would those work like the lures you recommended?
